Women's Swimmers Race Away with Two Meet Records at MIAA Relays

Hope College women's swimmers set two MIAA Relays records on Friday at Calvin University.

The Flying Dutch recorded the fastest times in both the 500-yard progressive relay and the 400 medley relay.

Hope also won the 1,500-yard 3x500 freestyle relay during the non-scoring meet.

In the 500 progressive relay, freshman Bella Turner (Chelsea, Michigan / Chelsea HS), junior Delaney Wesolek (Bay City, Michigan / John Glenn), freshman Maggie Monroe (Eaton Rapids, Michigan / Eaton Rapids) and freshman Laurel Wasiniak (Northville, Michigan / Northville) clocked a winning time of 4 minutes, 44.27 seconds. They passed Kalamazoo College's 2015 record of 4:46.34.

In the 400 medley relay, sophomore Sara Kraus (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford), freshman Katie Hermann (Canton, Michigan / Mercy), freshman Ashlea Swingewood (Carmel, Indiana / Carmel) and sophomore Greta Gidley (Franklin, Michigan / Mercy) posted a first-place swim of 4:01.68. They passed the Flying Dutch's 2021 meet record of 4:09.86.

Hope's 3x500 freestyle relay of Swingewood, senior Paige Kuhn (Dorr, Michigan / Hamilton) and sophomore Grace Wesley (Grosse Pointe Shores, Michigan / Grosse Pointe North) touched the wall in first with a time of 16:36.53.

The Flying Dutch also finished runner-up in six relays, including the 100 and 200 breaststroke.

The 100 breaststroke relay of senior Ari Schafer (Barrington, Illinois / Barrington CommunitY), Hermann, junior Jess Estabrook (Carmel, Indiana / Carmel) and senior Aubrey East (Farmington Hills, Michigan / North Farmington) recorded a swim of 1:00.15.

The 200 breaststroke relay of East, freshman Madi Remenscheider (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa), Gidley and Turner posted a time of 2:09.79.

The 100 freestyle relay of Wesolek, junior Maggie Hoerner (Lansing, Michigan / Holt), Monroe and Wasiniak clocked a swim of 46.07.

The 200 backstroke relay of Wesolek, sophomore Norah Martin (Middleton, Wisconsin / Middleton), Wesley and sophomore Lauren Ryle (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Catholic Central) finished with a time of 1:51.17.

The 200 butterfly relay of Kraus, Hermann, Gidley and senior Alyssa Kerkman (South Bend, Indiana / St. Joseph) touched the wall in second at 1:47.12.

The 200 medley relay of Wesolek, Turner, Monroe and Wasiniak touched the wall second at 1:39.95.

Hope returns to Calvin on Saturday, Oct. 22, at 11 a.m. for the "Be Better; Invite" that also features the University of Michigan and Davenport University.
