Men's Cross Country Posts Highest Finish at NCAA Regional in Seven Years

The Flying Dutchmen finished seventh out of 38 teams.

Sophomore Connor Vachon earned all-region honors with an eighth-place finish.
The Hope College men's cross country team closed a breakthrough season with a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional on Saturday at Three Fires Golf Club in Holland.

With 247 points, the Flying Dutchmen recorded their highest finish in the regional meet since a sixth-place effort in 2014.

It was also Hope's second consecutive Top 10 finish in the regional.

"This has been a fantastic year for the guys," head coach Mark Northuis said. "They made a big jump for what they wanted to accomplish this year. At the halfway point, we were close to where we wanted to be, but we faded a little bit. We're young. We're excited about the future. They're already excited about the track season and the next cross country season."

No. 14-ranked John Carroll University (Ohio) claimed the regional title by totaling 48 points and finishing 17 ahead of runner-up and 15th-ranked Case Western Reserve University (Ohio).

John Carroll's Alex Phillip repeated as regional champion with an 8K run of 23 minutes, 56.7 seconds. Phillip will run for a second consecutive national championship on Saturday, Nov. 19, at Michigan State University's Forest Akers Golf Course in East Lansing.

This is Vachon's first all-region honor.
