Two Women's Swimming School Records Set at Day 1 of Kenyon Invite

The Hope College women's swimming and diving opened the three-day Kenyon College Total Performance Invitational in a flurry.

The 12th-ranked Flying Dutch set two school records and clocked six Top 10 times in team history on Thursday in Gambier, Ohio. With 195 points, Hope is fourth in the seven-team event that includes three nationally-ranked teams, including the top-ranked host.

The Flying Dutch opened the evening session by recording a school-record 200-yard freestyle relay of 1 minute, 34.35 seconds. Sophomore Greta Gidley (Franklin, Michigan / Mercy), freshman Lauren Wasiniak (Northville, Michigan / Northville), sophomore Sara Kraus (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford) and junior Delaney Wesolek (Bay City, Michigan / John Glenn) placed fourth.

The relay passed the 2019 school record of 1:35.20 held by Alli Eppinga, Emma Schaefer, Sydney Asselin and Meg Peel. NCAA Division III West Chester University (Pa.) won in 1:32.77.

Gidley's lead-off split in the relay of 23.97 seconds is the ninth-fastest 50 freestyle in Hope's history.

Kraus improved her own school record in the 200 individual medley with a swim of 2:03.44 during prelims. Kraus went 2:03.55 at the Kenyon Meet as a freshman.

Kraus finished third after going 2:03.82 during the finals — trailing only Kenyon's Jennah Fadley at 2:02.53 and Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.)'s Savannah Xu at 2:02.89.

Both freshman Katie Hermann (Canton, Michigan / Mercy) and Gidley joined Kraus in Hope's all-time top five in the 200 IM with swims of 2:05.80 and 2:04.48, respectively. Hermann clocked her time during prelims and finished eighth in the 'A' final with a swim of 2:06.50. Gidley won the 'B' final and placed 11th with a time of 2:04.48.

Wasiniak swam Hope's second-fastest time ever in the 50 freestyle and finished runner-up in the 'A' Final at 23.55 seconds.

Sophomore Lauren Ryle (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Catholic Central) took 13th in the 50 free after posting 24.20 in the 'B' final. Freshmen Maggie Monroe (Eaton Rapids, Michigan / Eaton Rapids) and Bella Turner (Chelsea, Michigan / Chelsea) tied for 18th at 24.40.

Freshman Ashlea Swingewood (Carmel, Indiana / Carmel) recorded the third-fastest time ever at Hope in the 500 freestyle. Swingewood finished fifth in the event at Kenyon with a swim of 5:02.16 during the 'A' final.

Hope's 400 medley relay of sophomore Norah Martin (Middleton, Wisconsin / Middleton), freshman Madi Remenschneider (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa), Swingewood and junior Maggie Hoerner (Lansing, Michigan / Holt) took 17th with a swim of 4:02.44.

Top-ranked Kenyon leads with 676.5 points. The three-day meet continues on Friday, Nov. 18, with a 10 a.m. morning session and a 6 p.m. evening session.
