Ashlea Swingewood Sets Women's 400 IM Record During Day 2 at Kenyon

Swimmer Ashlea Swingewood made sure the 12th-ranked Hope College women's swimming and diving team added another school record on Friday in Gambier, Ohio.

The freshman from Carmel, Indiana (Carmel HS) clocked a sixth-place time of 4 minutes, 30.98 seconds in the 'A' final of the 400-yard individual medley at the Kenyon College Total Performance Invitational.

Swingewood surpassed Sarah Sohn's 2009 Flying Dutch record of 4:31.75. On Thursday, Hope set records in the 200 IM and the 200 freestyle relay.

After two days, the Flying Dutch are in fourth place with 711 points and lead fifth-place SUNY-Geneso by 273.5 points in the seven-team meet. Top-ranked Kenyon is in first with 1,830.5 points and is followed by NCAA Division III West Chester University (Pa.) and 11th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University.

The three-day meet concludes on Saturday, Nov. 19, with 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. sessions.

Hope recorded four Top 10 all-time swims on Friday.

In the 400 IM, freshman Katie Hermann (Canton, Michigan / Mercy) clocked the Flying Dutch's fifth-fastest time in the event with an eighth-place 4:32.50. Sophomore Grace Wesley (Grosse Pointe Shores, Michigan / Grosse Pointe North) was 18th after clocking 4:39.76 in the 'B' final.

In the 100 breaststroke, sophomore Greta Gidley (Franklin, Michigan / Mercy) recorded the Flying Dutch's sixth-fastest swim by touching the wall at 1:05.79 during prelims. Gidley took ninth after going 1:07.17 during the 'A' final. Senior Aubrey East (Farmington Hills, Michigan / North Farmington) was 19th after finishing the 'B' final at 1:08.71.

In the 100 butterfly, Gidley went 57.07 during prelims to tie for the Flying Dutch's fifth-fastest swim. Gidley qualified for the 'B' final and took 10th at 58.19. Senior Alyssa Kerkman (South Bend, Indiana / St. Joseph) was 12th at 57.76.

Sophomore Sara Kraus (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford) recorded a runner-up 100 backstroke of 55.50 seconds in the 'A' final.
Three Hope swimmers compete in the 'B' final: junior Delaney Wesolek (Bay City, Michigan / John Glenn) in 12th at 58.07, sophomore Norah Martin (Middleton, Wisconsin / Middleton) in 14th at 58.71, and junior Ashley Geddes (Zeeland, Michigan / Zeeland East) in 18th at 1:00.55.

Freshman Laurel Wasiniak (Northville, Michigan / Northville) clocked a third-place 200 freestyle of 1:52.20.

Two of Wasiniak's teammates swam in the 'B' final: freshman Maggie Monroe (Eaton Rapids, Michigan / Eaton Rapids) in 17th at 1:55.76 and freshman Bella Turner (Chelsea, Michigan / Chelsea) in 19th at 1:56.00.

Hope placed seventh in the 800 freestyle relay..

Swingewood, Wasiniak, Kraus and Gidley posted a time of 7:43.53.

In the 200 medley relay, the Flying Dutch finished 12th. Martin, sophomore Lauren Ryle (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Catholic Central), junior Maddy O'Donnell (Lincolnshire, Illinois / Stevenson) and Monroe finished in 1:49.85.
