Derik Smith Competes for Team USA at Track and Field Event in Portugal

The sophomore is taking part in the International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Federation 2022 World Games

Hope College sophomore Derik Smith concluded the International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Federation 2022 World Games with three first-place finishes in four events.

The three-day event was held in the southwestern coastal city of Vila Real de Santo Antonio, Portugal. 

The physical and health education major and two-sport athlete at Hope won his division in the discus, long jump and 100 meters. The Niles, Michigan, native, uses a prosthetic lower right leg after childhood cancer and is a member of the Flying Dutchmen track and field, and football, teams.

Smith (Edwardsburg HS) recorded a winning discus total of 669 points in the Men's Discus F/42/63/64 Division that included a top heave of 40 meters (131.2 feet).

In the long jump, Smith posted a first-place total of 561 points in the T 44/62/64 Division that included a top leap of 5.8 meters (17.3 feet).

In the 100 meters, Smith finished with a winning total of 1,004 points in the T45/46/62/64 division after clocking a time of 12.70 seconds.

In the javelin, Smith placed third in the F42/43/44/64 division with 569 points after recording a toss of 36.88 meters (121 feet).
