Split-Squad Women's Swim/Dive Takes Third at Davenport Quad

A stellar split-squad performance gave the 13th-ranked Hope College women's swimming and diving team a third-place finish at the Davenport University Quad this weekend.

The Flying Dutch totaled 859 points over the two-day meet at East Kentwood High School that concluded on Saturday despite not having a full roster. Hope also competed at the D3Shootout at the University of Chicago over the weekend.

Hope finished behind Davenport's 999 points and DePauw University (Indiana)'s 923. Kalamazoo College was fourth with 396 points.

On the men's side, the Flying Dutchmen were runner-up with a split-squad.

"It was a great two-day meet," assistant coach Dave Jolly said. "Throughout the meet, we compounded swims and put together great performances. It was fun to watch both teams working together. A positive mentality brings about great performances."

Sophomore diver Abby Koops (Ada, Michigan / Forest Hills Northern HS) won on the 1-meter board with a score of 253.34 points. 

The Flying Dutch also placed seventh with junior Farbarzhevich (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Northern) in fifth with 214.11 points, senior Allie Graver (Grosse Ile, Michigan / Grosse Ile) in seventh with 193.95 points, and freshman Hope Weeda (Grandville, Michigan / Calvin Christian) in eighth with 187.04 points.

Sophomore swimmer Grace Wesley (Grosse Pointe Shores, Michigan / Grosse Pointe North) recorded a runner-up performance in the 1,650-yard freestyle by clocking a time of 18 minutes, 39.36 seconds.

The Flying Dutch posted the next three fastest times as well: senior Paige Kuhn (Dorr, Michigan / Hamilton) placed third at 18:41.38, junior Jess Estabrook (Carmel, Indiana / Carmel) in fourth at 18:50.33, and junior Lindsey Case (Plymouth, Michigan / Mercy) in fifth at 18:59.44.

Hope recorded four of the fastest eight times in the 400 individual medley: senior Aubrey East (Farmington Hills, Michigan / North Farmington) in third at 4:51.52, Wesley in fourth at 4:53.36, Case in sixth at 5:03.576 and Estabrook in eighth at 5:07.39.

East also took third in the 100 breaststroke with a swim of 1:09.41 and the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:35.57. Freshman Madi Remeschneider (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa) was sixth in both events at 1:12.78 in the 100 and 2:38.20 in the 200.

Freshman Bella Turner (Chelsea, Michigan / Chelsea) posted a third-place swim in the 200 freestyle at 1:58.76.

Senior Macey Meyer (San Antonio, Texas / Johnson) finished third in the 200 backstroke at 2:13.81. Junior Ashley Geddes (Zeeland, Michigan / Zeeland East) was fifth at 2:15.87.

Sophomore Katie Weedon (Whitinsville, Massachusetts / Whitinsville Christian) placed third in the 200 butterfly with a swim of 2:18.08. Mayer came in fourth at 2:18.23. Junior Maddy O'Donnell (Lincolnshire, Illinois / Stevenson) was seventh at 2:22.32.

Koops took third in 3-meter diving with a score of 254.48 points. Farbarzhevich finished fifth with 230.40 points. Graver was seventh with 194.47.

Wesley clocked a fourth-place time in the 500 free of 5:25.31.

Hope recorded fourth-place swims in three relays:
  • 400 freestyle of sophomore Lauren Ryle (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Catholic Central), Wesley, junior Maggie Hoerner (Lansing, Michigan / Holt), and Turner at 3:47.25;
  • 200 medley of Geddes, East, Ryle and Turner at 1:53.25; 
  • 400 medley of Geddes, East, Wesley and Turner at 4:12.86.
O'Donnell swam to fifth place in the 200 IM with a time of 2:18.80. Remenscheider was eighth at 2:21.55.

Ryle placed fifth in the 50 free at 25.36. 

Geddes came in fifth in the 100 backstroke at 1:02.03.

Turner and Ryle went back-to-back in the 100 freestyle in fifth (54.26) and sixth (54.69), respectively.

Hope's 200 freestyle relay of Turner, Ryle, Hoerner and Weedon clocked a seventh-place swim of 1:43.90.

Ryle was seventh in the 100 butterfly at 1:04.09.
