Women's Soccer Pair Earns All-Region Honors

Defender Jenna Mustapha and forward Natalie Hammer are recognized by the United Soccer Coaches organization

Natalie Hammer's and Jenna Mustapha's triumphant returns from injury powered the Hope College women's soccer team this season.

Both juniors have received all-region recognition from the United Soccer Coaches for their distinguished play during the 2022 season. The region featured teams from Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri and Wisconsin.

Mustapha (Ada, Michigan / Forest Hills Northern HS) is one of four second-team defenders and 38 selections overall.

Hammer (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford) is one of five third-team forwards.

This is Mustapha's second all-region honor. In 2021, the chemistry major received first-team distinction.

"Jenna consistently making all-region teams during her time at Hope shows her ability to continually play at a high level," associate head coach Elliott Slenk said. "Coming back from a major knee injury at the end of last season, Jenna's determination and hard work is recognized with this honor. We are so thankful that she is a part of our program."

This is first all-region honor for Hammer, a German and Social Work major.

"Nat does so much for our team as a leader and program builder. She cares for her teammates and wants everyone to be included," Slenk said. "To have her on-field efforts be recognized with this honor is special and something she should be proud of. We are thankful for everything Nat brings to our program."

Mustapha claimed her third All-MIAA First Team honor this season. After suffering an injury late in the 2021 season, Mustapha returned to play in 13 games — and make 11 starts on the backline.

Mustapha's defense helped the Flying Dutch hold opponents to 15 goals in 17 games. Hope posted seven shutouts en route to a 10-5-2 overall record and a 5-2-1 mark in MIAA play.

Hammer shined in her return after missing the entire 2021 fall season due to injury.

In 17 games, Hammer scored a career-best seven goals and tied for the team lead. The Flying Dutch finished with 37 goals for the season.
