Hope College's Nick Hoffman successfully defended his MIAA title in the 1-mile, winning the race for the second-straight year at the MIAA Indoor Championships.
Hoffman, a senior out of Holland, Michigan (Holland HS), won the 1-mile in a time of 4 minutes, 17.31 on Saturday at Trine University, beating his nearest competitor by more than a second.
"He is really strong, one of the best milers in the country, and I'm really glad he could get the win today," remarked head coach Kevin Cole.
Anders Bogard (Mattawan, Michigan / Kalamazoo Christian) and Dan Campbell (Brighton, Michigan / Brighton) also finished in the Top 8 in the 1 mile.
The Flying Dutchmen finished fifth in the team standings with 72.5 points.
Zach Elmore (Cadillac, Michigan / Cadillac) was runner-up in the pole vault, clearing a height of 4.25 meters for his second top-two finish in the event. The junior won the pole vault title back in 2020 as a freshman.
Nathan Trumble (Granger, Indiana / Trinity School At Greenlawn) scored points in 200- and 400-meter races. The senior took fourth overall in the 400, clocking a time of 50.66, while finishing in fifth place in the 200 with a season-best time of 22.73.
Trumble also lent his talents to the 4x400 meter relay, along with David McHugh (Whitehall, Michigan / Reeths Puffer), Drew Dow (Bridgman, Michigan / Bridgman) and Nathan Woolum (Mattawan, Michigan / Mattawan). The battle for the top spot would come down to the wire and ultimately the Flying Dutch would settle for second place to Calvin by less than two-tenths of a second.
"I thought Nate had a great day. He came close to the record in the 200 and almost squeaked out a win in the 4x4. He and all the other guys on the relay did a tremendous job," Cole said.
Jackson Player (San Antonio, Texas / Winston Churchill) turned in a career-best time of 8.59 in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles to place just off the podium in fourth.
Two Hope runners scored points in the 400-meter run, led by Woolum's fifth-place result. The junior finished the race at the 51.03 mark, followed by Dow in seventh place with his time of 51.52.
In the 800-meters, freshman Connor Vachon (Jenison, Michigan / Jenison) paced the Flying Dutchmen with a fifth-place time of 1:57.87. Tyler King (Villa Park, Illinois / Willowbrook) added a point to the team tally with his eighth-place result.
Other individual point scorers for Hope included Bogard in the 3,000-meters (seventh, 9:03.62), Case VanderZee (Holland, Michigan / Holland Christian) in the high jump (sixth, 1.80 meters) and McHugh (fifth, 12.81 meters).
