Rebecca Markham Wins 5K at Emory Open; Greta Robrahn Runner-Up in Shot Put

Freshman Greta Robrahn heaved the longest outdoor shot put toss in at least 10 years, and sophomore Rebecca Markham won the 5,000 meters for the Hope College women's track and field team this weekend in Atlanta.

Markham (Hoffman Estates, Illinois / William Fremd HS) clocked a first-place time of 17 minutes, 43.49 seconds to win her race by six seconds.

Robrahn recorded a distance of 13.01 meters (42 feet, 8 ¾ inches) to finish runner-up out of 38 entrants at the Emory University Open. She ranks third in NCAA Division III.

Robrahn (Zeeland, Michigan / Zeeland East) came within 0.73 meters and 2 feet, 4 ¼ inches of the 1989 school record belonging to Mary Busscher.

Markham and Robrahn, pictured left to right, were the top performances at the two-day meet for the Flying Dutch, who totaled 62.5 points over two days and placed fifth out of 23 teams.

Hope posted Top-10 finishes in 11 events.

In the 1,500-meter Elite Race, senior Jacinda Cole (Holland, Michigan West Ottawa) finished runner-up with a time of 4 minutes, 45.28 seconds. Junior Anna Mason (Zeeland, Michigan / Libertas Christian) placed sixth at 4:55.98. Sophomore Olivia Quillan (Grandville, Michigan / Calvin Christian) was seventh at 4:58.16.

In the 4x800 relay, the Flying Dutch's Cole, sophomore Erin Moran (Arlington Heights, Illinois / John Hersey), junior Heleyna Tucker (Midland, Michigan / H.H. Dow), and Ellie Jankowski (Granger, Indiana / Penn) finished runner-up with a time of 9:46.22. It was one of two sub-10-minute runs at the meet.

In the 4x100 relay, Hope clocked a fourth-place time of 50.30 seconds with junior Helen Dodge (Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan / Grosse Pointe South), junior Amanda Lines (Naples, Florida / First Baptist Academy, sophomore Kimmie Drake (Katy Texas / Seven Lakes), and junior Grace Behrens (Mishawaka, Indiana / Trinity School at Greenlawn).

In the pole vault, junior Kyria Gowman (Livonia, Michigan / Adlai Stevenson) cleared 3.0 meters (9-10) for sixth place.

In the 400-meter hurdles, senior Hayley Scollard (Traverse City, Michigan / T.C. Central) placed sixth with a run of 1:08.02. Senior Sophie Hall (Holt, Michigan / Haslett) was ninth at 1:10.84.

In the discus, junior Amelia Bont (Chesterfield, Michigan / Anchor Bay) recorded a ninth-place toss of 34.9 meters (112-2).

In the javelin, junior Lauren Tocco (Traverse City, Michigan / St. Francis) finished ninth with a heave of 27.67 meters (90-2).

In the high jump, freshman Allison Schram (Fenton, Michigan / Hartland) tied for ninth by clearing 1.45 meters (4-9).

In the 4x400 relay, the Flying Dutch's Julie Timperman (Lafayette, Indiana / Faith Christian), Behrens, Anna Haseley (Jenison, Michigan / Hudsonville), and Madeline Moore (Hillsdale, Michigan / Hillsdale) clocked a 10th-place time of 4:18.52.

Hope's next meet is Friday, April 1, at the Olivet College Invitational.
