John Conlon '97 Steps Down as Men's Soccer Coach

Head men's soccer coach John Conlon '97 has announced that he has decided to step down from his role at Hope College.

"After much reflection and consideration, I have made the difficult decision to resign from the head coach position," said Conlon. "Although I was enthusiastic about the opportunity, I have realized that I wouldn't be able to give 100 percent of myself to the position. I don't believe this would be fair to the team or the college. I regret the disruption that this change of heart may cause, but I know that stepping away is what is best for myself, my family and Hope College."

"I am thankful to Hope for giving me this opportunity and for understanding my decision, and I am leaving with the utmost respect for the college, the soccer program and the players," he added. "I believe the best is yet to come for Hope men's soccer."

Athletic Director Tim Schoonveld said a national search for his replacement is underway.

"John and I spoke at length last week, and it was clear that he had given this matter a lot of thought. Knowing how difficult this decision was for him, I especially appreciate his concern for timing. He wanted to ensure enough time for us to find our next head coach, well ahead of the fall 2022 season, so that we can remain focused on the success of our student-athletes," said Schoonveld.

"We are disappointed that John will not be the coach to lead Hope men's soccer into the future, but we wish him and his family the very best. As an alumnus and long-time friend of the soccer program, he will always be a member of the Hope family."
