This time, the Hope College women's lacrosse team thwarted an opponent's comeback bid.
The Flying Dutch earned a 14-12 victory at Trine University on Wednesday by winning the final two draw controls and scoring the final goal.
Senior Madison McCreery (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford HS), pictured, sealed the win with 31 seconds remaining. Five days after a 24-23 loss at home to Saint Mary's College, Hope improved to 6-5 overall and evened its MIAA record at 1-1.
Saint Mary's recorded the final three goals against the Flying Dutch in their MIAA opener. On Wednesday, Trine scored twice in a span of 21 seconds, pulling within one goal at 13-12 with 1 minute, 59 seconds remaining.
With the game hanging in the balance, senior Madison Micho (Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) won the draw control to give the Flying Dutch possession. After a Hope timeout, the Flying Dutch ran 66 seconds off the clock before freshman Ruthie Anderson (Lowell, Michigan / Lowell) set up McCreery for her 20th goal of the season with 31 seconds remaining.
Sophomore Molly Frederickson (Alto, Michigan / Lowell) then won the draw control, and Hope ran out the remainder of the clock. Trine fell to 6-3 overall and 1-1 in MIAA play.
McCreery's career-high five goals led the Flhing Dutch. McCreery also collected a team-high two assists.
Two of McCreery's helped stake Hope to a 4-0 lead 6 1/2 minutes into the first quarter.
Frederickson and sophomore Elena Salazar (Howell, Michigan / Hartland) chipped in three goals apiece for Hope.
Trine received three goals apiece from Liz Ghent, Ella Dougherty, and Danielle Gargiulo.
The Flying Dutchmen's next match is Saturday, April 16, at 4 p.m. at home vs. Alma College at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.
