Spencer Cable waited 12 days for his at-bat, but it was worth the wait for the Hope College baseball team.
The senior from Hudsonville, Michigan (Hudsonville) singled home the go-ahead runs in the top of the eighth inning that propelled the Flying Dutchmen to 6-4 victory against Adrian College on Wednesday at Boeve Stadium.
The game was suspended on April 8 at Adrian due to an umpire's injury.
Cable was at-bat for the Flying Dutchmen when the game restarted with the bases loaded and one out. He smacked a single down the third-base line that scored pinch-runner Tucker Fritz (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa) and junior Caleb Regan (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Byron Center).
Reliever Shane Hykin (Ada, Michigan / Forest Hills Northern) retired six of the seven batters he faced at Boeve Stadium to earn his first save of the season.
Reliever Owen Krizan (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) earned the win after recording one inning of one relief at Adrian.
On April 8, play was halted after an Adrian pitch that hit the Flying Dutchmen's Al Money (Midland, Michigan / Midland) richoted off the mask of the home-plate umpire and knocked him to the ground. He could not continue.
Money's hit-by-pitch scored sophomore Robbie Stuursma (East Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) for Hope's second run of the inning.
Two batters earlier, senior Grant Barrett (Chelsea, Michigan / Chelsea) singled home senior Brant Kym (Libertyville, Illinois / Libertyville) after Kym was hit by a pitch to open the inning and advanced to a third when the Bulldogs misplayed Stuursma's grounder for an error.
Hope and Adrian traded runs in the seventh. Senior Evan Maday (Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Kentwood) was hit by pitch with two outs and the bases loaded. Dylan Johnson's RBI double off Krazan extended Adrian's lead to 4-2.
Maday's sixth-inning home run put the Flying Dutchmen on the board.
Adrian took an early 3-0 lead with a first-inning RBI single and a pair of RBI singles in the fourth.
