Men's Cross Country Places Fifth at the CMU Drenth Memorial

The Hope College men's and women's cross country teams gained an early look at an important course this season on Friday.

The Flying Dutchmen and Flying Dutch ran to fourth- and fifth-place finishes at Shepherd High School during Central Michigan University's Drenth Memorial. The course will host the MIAA Championships in October.

"Our goals for this meet while previewing the conference meet course were to acclimate the newcomers to college cross country and to finish strong the last half of the race," head coach Mark Northuis said. "We were successful in competitively achieving these goals. Both teams raced in packs and showed good improvements. The future looks very bright for both teams."

The Flying Dutchmen totaled 122 points in the men's 5K race. Eastern Michigan (29) took first and finished ahead of Michigan State's B team (62), Central Michigan (69), Michigan State's A team (75), Hope, Alma (187), Grand Rapids Community College (196), and Cleary (202).

Freshman Carston Cole (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa HS) topped the Flying Dutchmen with a 22nd-place, 5K run of 16:14.4 in the field of 74.

Five more Hope runners placed in the top 40.

Hope's next race is Saturday, Sept. 17, at the Wheaton College (Ill.) Dodds Invitational.
