Jackson Player Sets 60-Meter Hurdle Record; Men's Track/Field Wins at Aquinas

Jackson Player chased down a Hope College men's indoor track and field school record on Friday.

The senior from San Antonio, Texas (Churchill HS) eclipsed Josh Izenbart's four-year record in the 60-meter hurdles during the Aquinas College John Flaminio Classic.

Player clocked a winning time of 8.39 seconds that surpassed Izenbart's 8.49 in 2019.

"That's been his goal," head coach Kevin Cole said of Player. "He's been getting closer and closer. He was looking great in practice these last couple of weeks. The times were fast tonight. He ran a good, clean and fast race."

Player's effort helped the Flying Dutchmen win the three-team meet with 185 points. Hope finished 37 points ahead of runner-up Aquinas. Grace Christian University was third with 28 points.

Hope recorded the top performances in nine events.

"It was a good team effort," Cole said. "We won the meet. We won a lot of events. We had a lot of really good times for this early in the year."

Freshman Liam Danitz (West Branch, Michigan / Ogemaw Heights) and Player both scored in the 200 meters. Danitz clocked a first-place run of 23.84 points. Player was runner-up at 23.98 as well as second in the long jump at 5.97 meters (19 feet-7 inches).

Senior Eli Meder (Williamston, Michigan / Lansing Catholic) and sophomore Lucas Guidone (Chicago, Illinois / Taft) both scored in the 800 meters with runs of 1:56.83 and 1:57.50, respectively.

In the 3,000 meters, freshman Carston Cole (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa) and Jonas Fraley-Burgett (Kalamazoo, Michigan / Kalamazoo Central) went 1-2 with times of 9:04.08 and 9:14.31, respectively.

Hope also recorded the top throws in the weight throw: freshman Wil Pinkerton (Ann Arbor, Michigan / Pioneer) in first at 11.32 meters (37-1 ¾) and junior Silas Kubicki (South Bend, Indiana / James W. Riley) in second at 11.16 meters (36-7 ½).

In the mile, sophomore Connor Vachon (Jenison, Michigan / Jenison) took first by clocking a time of 4:22.93.

The Flying Dutchmen won the 4x400 relay as sophomore Alex Daniels (Holland, Michigan / Holland), Meder, Vachon and senior Nathan Woolum (Mattawan, Michigan / Mattawan) finished in 3:31.39.

Senior Zach Elmore (Cadillac, Michigan / Cadillac) posted the top pole vault by clearing 4.02 meters (13-2 ¼).
