Women's Track/Field Wins Nine Events, Takes First at Aquinas Open

The Hope College women's indoor track and field team recorded nine first-place performances en route to a winning effort at the Aquinas College John Flaminio Classic on Friday in Grand Rapids.

The Flying Dutch totaled 181 points and finished 31 points ahead of runner-up Aquinas. Grace Christian University took third with 16 points.
It was the first full-team meet of the indoor season. 

"It was a fast meet," head coach Kevin Cole said. "We had a lot of firsts and seconds, and swept a lot of events."

Hope went 1-2-3 in the 3,000 meters. 

In the 3,000 meters, sophomore Jane DeGroot (Northville, Michigan / Northville HS) led the charge with a run of 11 minutes, 34.68 seconds. Two freshman teammates crossed the finish line next: Ellie Coderre (Lisle, Illinois / Naperville) in second at 12:11.46, and Claire Vellinga (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa) in third at 12:24.69.

The Flying Dutch recorded the top two efforts in the triple jump, 200 meters, 800 meters and the mile.

In the triple jump, junior Taylor Novotny (Batavia, Illinois / Batavia) finished first with a leap of 9.98 meters (32 feet, 9 inches). Freshman Elliana Johnson (East Lansing, Michigan / Haslett) was runner-up at 9.76 meters (32-0 ¼).

In the 200 meters, freshman Sara Schermerhorn (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City West) and senior Helen Dodge (Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan / Grosse Pointe South) both went 1-2 with runs of 26.18 and 27.28 seconds, respectively.

In the 800 meters, senior Samantha Schermerhorn (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City West) won with a run of 2:25.70. Junior Erin Moran (Arlington Heights, Illinois / John Hersey) was runner-up at 2:26.48.

In the mile, senior Ellie Jankowski (Granger, Indiana / Penn) won with a run of 5:13.21. Freshman Madison Stern (Saline, Michigan / Saline) was runner-up at 5:20.94.

Senior Emma Althouse (Ludington, Michigan / Ludington) won the weight throw with a toss of 13.32 meters (43-8 ½).

Sophomore Greta Robrahn (Zeeland, Michigan / Zeeland West) took first in the shot put with a distance of 12.30 meters (40-4 ¼).

Freshman Anna Duesenberg (Rocky River, Ohio / Saint Joseph) clocked the top time in the 600 meters at 1:46.36.

The Flying Dutch's 4x400 relay of senior Julie Timperman (Lafayette, Indiana / Faith Christian), Samantha Schermerhorn, Moran and senior Grace Behrens (Mishawaka, Indiana / Trinity School at Greenlawn) recorded a winning run of 4:10.95.

Hope's next meet is Friday, Jan. 27, at 2 p.m. at Grand Valley State University's Bob Eubanks Open.
