Women's Swim/Dive Sinks Calvin, Finishes MIAA Dual Meets Unbeaten

The 12th-ranked Flying Dutch win Friday's meet, 162-81.

The 12th-ranked Hope College women's swimming and diving team completed a successful business trip to Grand Rapids on Friday.

In three more weeks, the Flying Dutch are aiming for another one.

Hope charged to a 162-81 victory at 19th-ranked Calvin University behind first-place performances in 11 events. The Flying Dutch finished their regular-season schedule with a 5-0 MIAA dual-meet record.

Next month, Hope will return to Calvin for the MIAA Championships on Wednesday-Saturday, February 15-18. The Flying Dutch will seek a third consecutive MIAA title. The outcome of the meet determines the league champion.

On Friday, Hope dominated diving and swept the top three spots in the 1,000-yard freestyle swim.

In 1-meter diving, sophomore Abby Koops (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Northern HS) led a top-seven sweep with a season-best, six-dive total of 270.66 points.

Junior Sophia Farbarzhevich (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Northern) placed runner-up with 214.20 points. Senior Allie Graver (Grosse Ile, Michigan / Grosse Ile) took third with 209.85 points.

Other Hope finishers were: 4. freshman Hope Weeda (Grandville, Michigan / Calvin Christian) with 195.81 points; 5. freshman Lydia Hawkins (Spring Arbor, Michigan / Western) with 189.45 points; 6. freshman Miranda Smith (Ada, Michigan / Forest Hills Eastern) with 180.37 points; and 7. sophomore Michaela Sander (Muskegon, Michigan / Mona Shores) with 171.89 points.

In 3-meter diving, the Flying Dutch posted the top six efforts.

Koops won with 269.11 points. Farbarzhevich finished second with 217.87 points. Sander recorded a third-place score of 205.27.

Other Hope places were: 4. Hawkins with 202.72 points, 5. Graver with 198.07 points, and 6. sophomore Molly Leonard (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Catholic Central) with 188.85 points.

Sophomore Norah Martin (Middleton, Wisconsin / Middleton) led a 1-2-3 Hope finish in the 1,000 freestyle by recording a winning swim of 11 minutes, 3.67 seconds.

Junior Jess Estabrook (Carmel, Indiana / Carmel) posted a second-place time of 11:20.74. Senior Paige Kuhn (Dorr, Michigan / Hamilton) was third at 11:26.98.

Three Hope swimmers clocked a pair of winning performances apiece.

Sophomore Sara Kraus (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford) took first in the 100-yard backstroke with a swim of 57.84 seconds and in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:07.39.

Freshman Ashlea Swingewood (Carmel, Indiana / Carmel) won the 200 freestyle in 1:54.35 and the 500 freestyle in 5:13.89. 

Sophomore Greta Gidley placed just behind Swingewood as runner-up in the 200 free at 1:55.10.

Freshman Laurel Wasiniak (Northville, Michigan / Northville) sprinted to first-place swims in the 50 freestyle of 24.10 seconds and in the 100 freestyle at 52.83.

The Flying Dutch swept both relays.

In the 200 medley relay, Gidley, Kraus, senior Alyssa Kerkman (South Bend, Indiana / St. Joseph) and freshman Bella Turner (Chelsea, Michigan / Chelsea) raced to a winning time of 1:46.67. It was the team's second-fastest time of the season.

In the 400 freestyle relay, Turner, junior Delaney Wesolek (Bay City, Michigan / John Glenn), sophomore Lauren Ryle (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Catholic Central) and Wasiniak recorded a first-place swim of 3:34.93.
