Greta Gidley Swims Meet and School Records to Open Up Kenyon Invite

The junior from Franklin, Michigan (Mercy HS) raced to a meet record in the 200-yard individual medley and school record in the 100 butterfly with two of the top times in NCAA Division III in two events during the opening two days of Kenyon College's Top Performance Invitational.

The performances helped propel the 11th-ranked Flying Dutch to third place at the eight-team event with 843.5 points. Hope trails top-ranked Kenyon (1,771.5) and NCAA Division II West Chester, Pa. with 921.5.

The final day of the meet starts on Saturday, Nov. 18, at 10:30 a.m. with prelims and 5:30 p.m. with finals.

In the 200-yard individual medley on Tuesday, Gidley clocked a meet-record swim of 2 minutes, 1.90 seconds and passed the old mark of 2:02.97. Entering the weekend, the fastest 200 IM of the season was 2:04.40.

In the 100 butterfly on Friday, Gidley recorded a swim of 54.87 seconds that passed her previous Hope record of 55.15.

Both of Gidley's times topped the nation's previous best heading into the weekend.

Hope also went 1-2 in women's 1-meter diving and recorded five of the top scorers.

Junior Abby Koops (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Northern) finished first with a meet-record total of 487.05 points and eclipsed the old mark of 484.35.

Senior Cameron Hamilton (Libertyville, Illinois / Libertyville) took second at 462.2. Senior Sophia Farbarzhevich (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Northern) placed third with 446.00 and was followed by sophomore Miranda Smith (Ada, Michigan / Forest Hills Eastern) in sixth at 436.95, freshman Laura Zupancic (Fort Collins, Colorado / Liberty Common) in eighth at 47.20 and junior Michaela Sander (Muskegon, Michigan / Mona Shores) in 10th at 426.55.

In the 200 medley relay, the Flying Dutch swam the third-fastest time as Kraus, Stolle, Gidley and freshman Anna Stolle (Fishers, Indiana / Hamilton Southeastern) touched the wall at 1:44.15.

In the 200 IM, junior Sara Kraus (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford) placed fourth with a swim of 2:04.64. Stolle finished 15th at 2:06.45. Freshman Paige Potter (Lake Orion, Michigan / Lake Orion) was 19th at 2:010.29.

In the 800 freestyle relay, Gidley, freshman Sydney VanLente (Ada, Michigan / Forest Hills Central), junior Norah Martin (Middleton, Wisconsin / Middleton) and senior Delaney Wesolek (Bay City, Michigan / John Glenn) clocked a ninth-place effort of 7:45.69.

In the 400 IM, sophomore Ashlea Swingewood (Carmel, Indiana / Carmel) took 15th at 4:37.37. Potter was 18th at 4:41.93.

In the 200 freestyle, Wesolek tied for 18th with a swim of 1:57.42.

In the 100 breaststroke, three Hope swimmers made it to the 'B' final: Lauren Ryle (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Catholic Central) in 17th at 1:06.44, Dillon Horsley (Indianapolis, Indiana / North Central) in 18th at 1:07.05, and Bella Turner (Chelsea, Michigan / Chelsea) in 19th at 107.13.

In the 100 butterfly, VanLente made it to the 'B' final and took 19th at 58.93.

Also on Thursday, Hope finished fourth in the 200 freestyle relay. Gidley, Turner, Ryle and Wesolek recorded a swim of 1:35.18.

In the 400 medley relay, the Flying Dutch posted a time of 3:49.66 behind swims from Katie Hermann (Canton, Michigan / Mercy), Gidley and Ryle.

Ryle finished ninth in the 50 free at 23.97. Turner took 15th at 24.19. Wesolek was 18th at 24.26.

In the 200 IM, Stolle clocked a 15th-place swim of 2:06.45. Potter was 19th at 2:10.29.

Hope is ahead of No. 13 Case Western Reserve, Ohio (921.5), No. 15 Carnegie Mellon, Pa. (696.5), No. 23 SUNY-Geneseo (378), NAIA Lindsey Wilson, Ky. (194) and John Carroll, Ohio (178.5).
