The Hope College volleyball team served up one of its memorable seasons in 2023.
The Flying Dutch made their second NCAA Division III Championships title game appearance in program history and finished as national runner-up.
Led by head coach
Becky Schmidt, Hope completed the season with a 32-3 overall record and losing to defending national champion Juniata College (Pa.) in the finals.
The Flying Dutch placed second in the final American Volleyball Coaches Association poll of the season.
Hope had three student-athletes receive All-America honors, including the AVCA Co-National Player of the Year,
Addie VanderWeide, a junior outside hitter from Grand Rapids, Michigan (Grand Rapids Christian HS). VanderWeide also was an AVCA First Team All-American.
Sophomore setter
Lauren Lee (Plymouth, Michigan / Saline) made the All-America Second Team for her second All-America honor.
Junior middle blocker
Alison DeWeerd (Kentwood, Michigan / South Christian) was an Honorable Mention All-American.
The Flying Dutch won an NCAA-record four consecutive five-set matches to reach the championship match in Claremont, Calif., on December 2. Two of them came during the NCAA regional Hope hosted at DeVos Fieldhouse.
The Flying Dutch earned the MIAA's automatic to the NCAA Championships by defeating Calvin University in the title match.
Hope also claimed an outright regular-season MIAA title and completed the second sweep of the regular-season and league tournament titles in program history.
