Women's Indoor Track/Field Posts 2 Wins, 1 School Record at GVSU Tune-Up

One school record and two event victories highlighted the Hope College women's indoor track and field team's performances at the Grand Valley State University Tune-Up on Friday.

Junior Taylor Novotny (Batavia, Illinois / Batavia HS) led a 1-2-3 Flying Dutch finish in the triple jump during the non-scoring meet, while senior Anna Mason (Zeeland, Michigan / Libertas Christian) clocked a winning 1-mile run.

In the 200 meters, freshman Sara Schermerhorn (Traverse City, Michigan / T.C. West) broke the Hope indoor record for the fourth time this season with a run of 25.58 seconds.

The Flying Dutch recorded 15 Top-5 performances during the seven-team meet.

In the triple jump, Novotny posted a top leap of 9.72 meters (31 feet, 10 ¾ inches). Freshman Elliana Johnson took second at 9.18 meters (30-1 ½). Senior Kyria Gowman was third at 8.80 meters (28-10 ½).

In the 1-mile run, Mason ran a time of 5:21.77. Senior Heleyna Tucker finished third at 5:23.31. Junior Jessie Schamanek (Rochester, Michigan / Stoney Creek was fifth at 5:28.81.

Hope finished runner-up in three events, including the 200.

In the long jump, senior Helen Dodge (Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan / Grosse Pointe South) jumped 4.96 meters (16-3 ¼) for second place. Novotny finished third at 4.65 meters (15-3 ¼). Johnson was fifth at 4.55 meters (14-11 ¼).

In the 60 meters, senior Grace Behrens (Mishawaka, Indiana / Trinity School at Greenlawn) placed second with a sprint of 8.08 seconds. Dodge took third at 8.19. Freshman Ava Schmidt (Saline, Michigan / Saline) was fifth at 8.28.

Sophomore Allison Schram (Fenton, Michigan / Hartland) finished third in the high jump after clearing 1.58 meters (5-2 ¼). Freshman Natalie Christnagel (Grosse Ile, Michigan / Grosse Ile) was fourth at 1.58 meters (5-2 ¼).

In the 400 meters, senior Julie Timperman (Lafayette, Indiana / Faith Christian) placed fourth with a run of 1.011.

In the 3,000 meters, sophomores Laura Taylor (Yorkville, Illinois / Yorkville) and Audrey White (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) took fourth and fifth, respectively with runs of 11:16.40 and 11:17.94.

Hope's next meet is the MIAA Indoor Championships on Saturday, Feb. 25, at 9:30 a.m. at Trine University.
