Women's Track/Field Ties for Second at Chicago Invite; Sara Schermerhorn Breaks Her Own Record

Freshman Sara Schermerhorn bettered her own school record in the 200 meters on Saturday and helped the Hope College women's indoor track and field team tie for second place at the University of Chicago's Windy City Rumble.

Schermerhorn (Traverse City, Michigan / T.C. West HS) won her race in 25.81 seconds. The reigning MIAA Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week went 0.08 faster than her mark last week at Grand Valley State University.

Hope shared runner-up team honors with Elmhurst University (Ill.) after totaling 107 points. Chicago won with 218 points.

The Flying Dutch placed runner-up in two events.

In the high jump, sophomore Allison Schram (Fenton, Michigan / Hartland) cleared 1.55 meters for second place.

In the 4x400 relay, the Flying Dutch finished second with senior Julie Timperman (Lafayette, Indiana / Faith Christian), senior Samantha Schermerhorn (Traverse City, Michigan / T.C. West), junior Erin Moran (Arlington Heights, Illinois / John Hersey) and senior Grace Behrens (Mishawaka, Indiana / Trinity School At Greenlawn) going 4:08.74.

Hope took third in five events.

In the distance medley relay, senior Ellie Jankowski (Granger, Indiana / Penn), Behrens, Samantha Schermerhorn, and senior Ana Tucker (Midland, Michigan / H.H. Dow) recorded a third-place run of 11:55.07.

In the 5,000 meters, sophomore Janie DeGroot (Northville, Michigan / Northville) clocked a third-place run of 19;39.98. Freshman Ellie Coderre (Lisle, Illinois /Naperville) placed fifth at 20:34.02. Freshman Claire Vellinga (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa) was seventh at 21:09.84.

In the 1-mile run, junior Olivia Quillan (Grandville, Michigan / Calvin Christian) finished third at 5:18.02. Sophomore Maddy Struck (Hainesville, Illinois / Grayslake Central) was eighth at 5:27.34.

In the 400 meters, Timperman posted a third-place rn of 1:02.65. Freshman Elisabeth Bonnani (Howell, Michigan / Howell) was eighth at 1:04.50.

In the weight throw, junior Emma Althouse (Ludington, Michigan / Ludington) placed fourth at 13.80 meters. Sophomore Marlie McDonald (Saranac, Michigan / Lowell) was eighth at 12.19 meters.

The Flying Dutch took fourth in four events.

In the 60 meters, Sara Schermerhorn clocked a fourth-place time of 8.01 seconds. Senior Helen Dodge (Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan / Grosse Pointe South) was sixth at 8.11.

In the 800 meters, Moran led Hope with a fourth-place run of 2:23.73. Freshman Madison Stern (Saline, Michigan / Saline) came in sixth at 2:24.65. Jankowski was seventh at 2:25.03.

In the shot put, sophomore Greta Robrahn (Zeeland, Michigan / /Zeeland East) recorded a fourth-place toss of 12.81 meters.

Freshman Kamryn Bice (Monroe, Michigan / Monroe) finished fifth at 11.39 meters. Junior Libby Strotman (Park Ridge, Illinois / Maine Township) took sixth at 11.32 meters. Freshman Karly Roelofs (Kingsley, Michigan / Kingsley Area) was seventh at 11.08 meters.

In the triple jump, freshman Elliana Johnson (East Lansing, Michigan / Haslett) posted a fourth-place leap of 10.17 meters.

Johnson also placed seventh in the long jump at 4.95 meters and eighth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 12.85 seconds.

Hope's next meet is Friday, Feb. 10, at 4 p.m. at Aquinas College.
