Women's Track/Field Finishes First in Five Events at Indiana Tech

A 1-2 finish in the 800 meters from freshman Madison Stern and junior Erin Moran finished among the top performances for the Hope College women's outdoor track and field team at the Indiana Tech Good Friday Invitational.

The Flying Dutch finished first in five events during the non-scoring meet in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Stern (Saline, Michigan / Saline HS) and Moran (Arlington Heights, Illinois / John Hersey) crossed the finish line in 2 minutes, 20.87 seconds and 2:22.21, respectively.

Freshman sprinter Sara Schermerhorn (Traverse City, Michigan / T.C. West) swept the 100 and 200-meter races with winning runs of 12.34 and 24.81 seconds, respectively. In the 200, senior Grace Behrens (Mishawaka, Indiana / Trinity School at Greenlawn) took fifth at 25.80.

Hope took first in both relays.

In the 4x100 relay, freshman Ava Schmidt (Saline, Michigan / Saline), Behrens, senior Julie Timperman (Lafayette, Indiana / Faith Christian), and Sara Schermerhorn clocked a winning run of 49.03.

In the 4x400, Timperman, Sara Schermerhorn, senior Samantha Schermerhorn (Traverse City, Michigan / T.C. West) and Behrens won in 4:00.66.

The Flying Dutch placed runner-up in one event and third in four of them.

In the triple jump, sophomore Allison Schram (Fenton, Michigan / Hartland) posted a second-place leap of 9.28 meters (30 feet, 5 ½ inches). Senior Kyria Gowman (Livonia, Michigan / Adlai Stevenson) was third at 9.13 meters (29-11 ½).

In the high jump, freshman Natalie Christnagel (Grosse Ile, Michigan / Grosse Ile) finished third by clearing 1.54 meters (5-0 ½).

In the shot put, sophomore Greta Robrahn (Zeeland, Michigan / Zeeland East) took third with a toss of 12.21 meters (40-0 ¾). Junior Libby Strotman (Park Ridge, Illinois / Maine Township) was fifth at 11.61 meters (38-1 ¼).

In the 1,500, junior Jessie Schamanek (Rochester, Michigan / Stoney Creek) recorded a third-place time of 5:00.57.

Hope finished fourth in three more events.

In the steeplechase, senior Emily Unger (Montague, Michigan / Montague) clocked a fourth-place run of 13:13.26.


In the javelin, junior Riki Ediger (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hamilton) posted a fourth-place toss of 34.01 meters (111-7). Strotman was sixth at 30.60 meters (100-5).

In the 400, Behrens crossed the finish line in fourth at 59.11. Timperman was ninth at 1:01.98.

In the hammer, senior Emma Althouse (Ludington, Michigan / Ludington) recorded a 10th-place toss of 41.13 meters (134-11).

Hope's next meet is Saturday, April 15, at 11:30 a.m. Central at Wheaton College (Ill.).
