Five Chosen as MIAA Athletes of the Week

Five from Hope College have been selected as the MIAA Athletes of the Week: senior Grace Behrens in women's track, senior Taylor Truman in women's tennis, senior Nathan Woolum in men's track,  junior Michael Mann in men's lacrosse, and sophomore Luke Wierengo in men's lacrosse.

This is the fourth time Mann has earned the distinction. This is the second time Truman has earned her honor. This is the first time Behrens, Wierengo and Woolum have been named MIAA Athlete of the Week in their respective sports.

Behrens (Mishawaka, Indiana / Trinity School at Greenlawn) is the MIAA Women's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week after winning the 400-meter dash at Davenport University Tune Up with a time of 57.19 seconds. The run ranks 23rd in NCAA Division III.

The environmental science major also finished second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.95, which is tied for 28th nationally.

Woolum (Mattawan, Michigan / Mattawan) is the MIAA Men's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week after taking first in 400-meter hurdles at Davenport with a time of 53.71. 

The business major is currently second in the MIAA and 16th in the nation.

Mann (Plymouth, Michigan / Detroit Jesuit) is the MIAA Men's Lacrosse Offensive Athlete of the Week for the second time this season.

The attacker and public accounting major collected 10 goals and two assists last week during two wins: 24-4 at Alma College and 17-9 at home vs. Calvin University. Mann tied a Hope College record with eight goals against Alma.

Wierengo (Northville, Michigan / Northville) is the MIAA Men's Lacrosse Defensive Athlete of the Week for the first time in his career.

The long-stick midfielder totaled 12 ground balls and five caused turnovers last week vs. Alma and Calvin while also contributing a goal and an assist.

Truman (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) is the MIAA Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week for the second time this season and in her career.

The exercise science major contributed to the Flying Dutch's run to an 11th consecutive MIAA Tournament title run by winning matches against Saint Mary's College in the semifinals and Kalamazoo College in the finals. Taylor earned the clinching point at Kalamazoo with a win at No. 6 singles.
