Swim/Dive Sweeps MIAA Athlete of the Week Accolades

The nationally ranked Hope College men's and women's swimming and diving teams earned all four MIAA Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week honors.

Swimmer Blake Hetherington and diver Finn Sanders earned the men's accolades. Swimmer Annie Lock and diver Grace Dawson claimed the women's awards.

Hetherington (Jackson, Michigan / Lumen Christi) is the MIAA Men's Swimming Athlete of the Week for the second time this season and the third time in his career after excelling for the victorious Flying Dutch against John Carroll University and Kalamazoo College last weekend.

The junior anchored Hope's 200-yard freestyle relay to a pool-record time and the fifth-fastest swim in NCAA Division III this season to start the meet (1:35.80) and the 400 freestyle relay that ended the meet with another pool record and the nation's fourth-fastest time (3:02.09).

An economics major, Hetherington also swam on the first-place 200 medley relay and finished runner-up in the 50 freestyle and seventh in the 100 freestyle.

Sanders (Wyoming, Michigan / Grandville) is the MIAA Men's Diving Athlete of the Week for the second time this season and the fourth time in his career.

The sophomore biochemistry and molecular biology major won both diving events at Kalamazoo and posted a NCAA Diving Regional-qualifying score on the 1-meter board. Sanders finished on the 1-meter board by more than 75 points, posting a season-high, six-dive score of 271.12 points, and on the 3-meter board (256.43).

Dawson (Jackson, Michigan / Western) is the MIAA Women's Diving Athlete of the Week for the second time this season and the fourth time in her career following her performances while Hope topped John Carroll and Kalamazoo.

The sophomore dominated the field at Kalamazoo, recording two NCAA Diving Regional-qualifying totals on the 1- and 3-meter boards (241.34 and 280.20 for six dives), and a lifetime best on the 3-meter.

Lock (Libertyville, Illinois / Libertyville) is the MIAA Women's Swimming Athlete of the Week for the first time.

The freshman swam the third leg on Hope's 200 freestyle relay that posted a pool-record time of 1:35.80, which ranks sixth fastest in Division III this season. Lock also anchored the victorious 400 freestyle relay. Individually, Lock finished runner-up in the 200 freestyle and third in both the 50 and 100 free.
