The Hope College men's outdoor track and field team clocked the fastest qualifying times in three events on Thursday at the MIAA Championships hosted by Olivet College.
The Flying Dutchmen also scored in three events during the opening day of the two-day meet.
In the pole vault, senior Zach Elmore (Cadillac, Michigan / Cadillac HS) placed fourth by clearing 4.05 meters (13 feet, 3 1/2 inches) and matching his season best.
In the 10,000 meters, senior Gabe DeYoung (Saegertown, Pennsylvania / Saegertown) posted a fifth-place run of 32 minutes, 34.83 seconds.
In the long jump, freshman Darion Nundley (Newport, Michigan / Woodhaven) tied for sixth with a season-best leap of 6.57 meters (21 feet, 6 3/4 inches).
Hope led the field in the 800 meters by recording the top three runs during preliminaries and qualifying a fourth for the finals on Friday, May 5.Â
Sophomore Lucas Guidone (Chicago, Illinois / Taft) posted the fastest 800-meter run at 1:55.54.
Junior Eli Meder (Williamston, Michigan / Lansing Catholic) followed with the second-fastest time at 1:55.95. Sophomore Connor Vachon (Jenison, Michigan / Jenison) was third at 1:56.21. Freshman Erickson Kunzler (Marne, Michigan / Grand Rapids Catholic) also advanced to the final with an eighth-place time of 1:57.11.
Senior Nathan Woolum (Mattawan, Michigan / Mattawan) leads four Flying Dutchmen qualifiers in the 400-meter hurdles after clocking a top time of 56.81 seconds during qualifying.
Sophomore Joshua Ennen (Zeeland, Michigan / Zeeland West) recorded the fourth-fastest preliminary run at 58.56. Woolum and Ennen are joined in the final by senior Jackson Player (San Antonio, Texas / Winston Churchill) who was seventh at 58.56 and sophomore Samuel Miller (Zionsville, Indiana / Zionsville) in eighth at 58.77.
Freshman Liam Danitz (West Branch, Michigan / Ogemaw Heights) is an MIAA title contender in both the 100 and 200 meters.
Danitz topped the field in 100-meter qualifying with a sprint of 11.03 seconds. He was second-fastest in the 200 meters at 22.38 seconds.
In the 110 hurdles, Player clocked the third-fastest qualifying run at 15.60 seconds.Â
In the 400 meters, freshman
Wyatt Marsh (Grand Blanc, Michigan / Lake Fenton) posted the fourth-fastest 400-meter qualifying time at 50.48 seconds.
The Flying Dutchmen are in sixth place with 12 points. Trine University leads with 84 points.
Field events on Friday start at noon, while running events get underway at 3:30 p.m.
