Senior runner Ana Tucker added a new individual title to her expansive Hope College resume while helping her Flying Dutch outdoor track and field team grab a Day 1 lead at the MIAA Championships.
Hope totaled 58 points during the first day of competition at Olivet College for a four-point lead over second-place Calvin University. Trine University is in third with 40 points.
The final day of the meet begins on Friday, May 5, at noon with field events. Running events will follow at 3:30 p.m.
Tucker (Midland, Michigan / H.H. Dow HS) won the 10,000 meters by clocking a time of 37 minutes, 29.26 seconds and finishing 42 seconds ahead of the field.
Two of Tucker's teammates also scored in the event. Ellie Coderre finished fifth at 40:26.0. Sophomore Jane DeGroot (Northville, Michigan / Northville) placed sixth at 40:35.06.
The Flying Dutch also scored in three other events on Thursday.
In the shot put, sophomore Greta Robrahn (Zeeland, Michigan / Zeeland East) earned MIAA runner-up honors with a season-best toss of 12.70 meters (41 feet, 8 inches). Freshman Kamryn Bice (Monroe, Michigan / Monroe) took fifth at 12.10 meters (39-8 1/2).Â
In the high jump, sophomore Allison Schram (Fenton, Michigan / Hartland) finished third by clearing 1.60 meters (5 feet, 3 inches). Freshman Natalie Christnagel (Grosse Ile, Michigan / Grosse Ile) was fifth at 1.51 meters (4-11 1/2).Â
In the hammer throw, senior
Emma Althouse (Ludington, Michigan / Ludington) posted a third-place heave of 40.64 meters (133-4). Freshman
Sophia Raymond (Woodstock, Illinois / Woodstock)Â took sixth at 37.74 meters (123-10).
In the long jump, senior Helen Dodge (Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan / Grosse Pointe South) placed fourth with a leap of 4.98 meters (16-4 1/4). Junior Taylor Novotny (Batavia, Illinois / Batavia) came in sixth at 4.83 meters (15-10 1/4).
During preliminaries, the Flying Dutch advanced a total of 12 runners for Friday's finals.
In the 200 meters, freshman Sara Schermerhorn led a pack of eight MIAA qualifiers, including three more from Hope, by posting a time of 25.08 seconds.
Senior Grace Behrens (Mishawaka, Indiana / Trinity School at Greenlawn) went third-fastest at 25.80. Senior Julie Timperman (Lafayette, Indiana / Faith Christian) placed fourth in prelims at 26.39. Dodge was seventh at 26:47.
In the 400 meters, Behrens topped a pack of four Flying Dutch qualifiers with a second-place effort of 59.29 seconds. Timperman took fourth at 1:00.67. Freshman Catherine Leahy (Elk Rapids, Michigan / Elk Rapids) came in seventh at 1:02.74. Freshman Hannah Tsiang (Brighton, Michigan / Brighton) was eighth at 1:03.20.
In the 100 meters, Schermerhorn clocked the second-fastest qualifying time at 12.45 seconds. Dodge and freshman Ava Schmidt (Saline, Michigan / Saline) also advanced, placing fourth at 12.88 and sixth at 13.17, respectively.
In the 800 meters, three from Hope moved on to the finals. Senior Ellie Jankowski (Granger, Indiana / Penn) placed fourth in her heat at 2:20.02. Senior Samantha Schermerhorn (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City West) finished second-fastest in her heat at 2:19.55 and edged her teammate, Quillan, who went 2:20.11.
In the 400 hurdles, two advanced to the finals: freshman Molly Durow (Glenview, Illinois / Glenbrook South) in fifth at 1:08.60 and freshman Elliana Johnson (East Lansing, Michigan / Haslett) in eighth at 1:10.70.
