Men's Golf Plucks First-Round Lead at Carthage's Strawberry Creek Classic

It was a scrumptious start for the Hope College men's golf team at the Carthage College Strawberry Creek Classic.

Led by a 5-under-par 67 from sophomore Liam Casey (Northville, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central), the Flying Dutchmen plucked the first-round lead at Carthage's 36-hole, 21-team event on Monday.

Hope fired a team score of 286 at The Club at Strawberry Creek in Kenosha, Wisconsin, for a four-stroke lead over second-place Carroll University (Wis). Host Carthage is third, five strokes behind the Flying Dutchmen.

"It always helps to have one really low score. For Liam to shoot 5-under, that set the tone," head coach Scott Lokers said. "I saw a lot of taking what the golf course would give. There was a lot of smart play, a lot of good course management. We didn't press when we shouldn't. When the opportunities were there, we took advantage."

Senior Will Robson (Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) and sophomore Patrick Michael (Carmel, Indiana / Carmel) both carded even-par 72s.

Senior Logan DeWitt (Zeeland, Michigan / Holland Christian) closed Hope's scoring group with 75.

All seven Hope golfers finished no more than 4-over par.

Junior Ben Jackson (Fort Wayne, Indiana / Carroll) chipped in a 71.

Junior Jack Guerrera (Northville, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central) recorded a 74.

Junior Will Webb (Lake Forest, Illinois / Lake Forest) shot a 76.

The final round tees off on Tuesday, Sept. 12, at 8:30 a.m. Central. Hope is scheduled to play in the last group.
