Will Webb Fires a 67, Men's Golf Takes Command of MIAA Title Chase

Will Webb willed his way to one of the best MIAA rounds in Hope College men's golf history on Saturday.

The junior from Lake Forest, Illinois (Lake Forest HS) fired a 4-under-par 67 at Trine University Zollner Golf Course and earned medalist honors at the third league jamboree of the season.

Webb finished one stroke ahead of Trine's Mark Civanich while leading the Flying Dutchmen's march to a first-place and season-low score of 281.

"He is putting it together right now," head coach Mark Lokers said of Webb. "He's fun to watch."

Buoyed as well by a 70 from senior Logan DeWitt (Zeeland, Michigan / Holland Christian) at Zollner, Hope surged into the lead for the overall team standings after 54 hours.

The Flying Dutchmen, who entered the day tied for second place and one stroke off the lead, are now 12 shots ahead of Trine and 14 ahead of Calvin University. Hope is the defending MIAA champion.

The last MIAA round this fall is Wednesday, Oct. 11, hosted by the University of Olivet at The Medalist Golf Club in Marshall. There will be 36 more holes played in the spring before an MIAA champion is crowned.

Webb joined an elite group of Hope golfers with his best round of the season.

The communication major is the fifth member of the Flying Dutchmen to shoot 67 or lower in MIAA play. Webb matched Ryan Shedd and Tommy Yamaoka, who carded 67s at Clearbrook Golf Course in 2003 and Wuskowhan Players Club in 2005, respectively.

The school record of 65 is shared by Nick Campbell and Josh Gibson, who fired 65s at Zollner Golf Course in 2012 and Wuskowhan Players Club in 2017, respectively.

"Will said afterward everything felt good today in terms of his golf game," Lokers said. "Everything was sharp for him. He had a lot of birdie chances. He converted them and shot a fantastic round."

Webb and DeWitt had plenty of company at the top end of the leadership. Four of their teammates finished at 1 or 2-over par.

Senior Will Robson (Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids), sophomore Patrick Michael (Carmel, Indiana / Carmel) and freshman Hank Roebuck (Ann Arbor, Michigan / Skyline) each tied for fifth place with 72s.

Sophomore Liam Casey (Northville, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central) tied for 11th with a 73.

"Two scores under par really helps," Lokers said. "For us to finish the tournament under par as a team is really encouraging."
