The 12th-ranked Hope College women's swimming and diving team made the most of an unexpected virtual meet.

The Flying Dutch set two pool records at the Dow Center and outscored Wheaton College (Ill.) and Kalamazoo College on Saturday.

Teams swam at their respective pools after a winter storm canceled the Michigan-Illinois Quad to be hosted by Wheaton. Hope swam at the Dow Center.

Hope finished first with 693 points. Wheaton placed second with 456 points. Kalamazoo was third with 330.

The Flying Dutch received pool records from junior Greta Gidley in the 100-yard backstroke and sophomore Katie Hermann in the 200 backstroke.

Hermann (Canton, Michigan / Mercy HS) posted a swim of 2:04.67 to surpass Laural Horton's 1998 mark of 2:06.81. Hope recorded the fastest five times in the event. Freshman Emma Hartman (Mason, Ohio / Mason) was runner-up at 2:11.25.

Gidley (Franklin, Michigan / Mercy) went 57.53 to lead off the victorious 400 medley relay and eclipse Horton's previous record of 58.33 seconds.

Gidley teamed with freshman Dillon Horsley (Indianapolis, Indiana / North Central), Hermann and senior Delaney Wesolek (Bay City, Michigan / John Glenn) for a winning effort of 4:00.46.

Hope clocked the fastest swims in four more events.

In the 50 freestyle, the Flying Dutch posted the seven best times. Gidley touched the wall first at 24.40. Sophomore Laurel Wasiniak (Northville, Michigan / Northville) was second at 24.93.

In the 200 breaststroke, junior Sara Kraus (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford) and freshman Anna Stolle (Fishers, Indiana / Hamilton Southeastern) led a 1-2 Hope finish with swims of 2:28.78 and 2:35.22, respectively.

In the 1,000 freestyle, sophomore Ashlea Swingewood (Carmel, Indiana / Carmel) finished first at 10:52.85.

In the 400 freestyle relay, Hope won as senior Madeline Tessin (Waxhaw, North Carolina / Marvin Ridge), Wesolek, junior Lauren Ryle (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Catholic Central) and Gidley clocked a swim of 3:39.53.

Stolle also finished runner-up in the 200 individual medley at 2:13.87.

Hope's next scheduled meet is Friday, Jan. 19, at 5 p.m. at Oakland University against NCAA Division I Oakland and Division II Saginaw Valley State University.
