Addie VanderWeide and Olivia Fiebing know how to be successful in the classroom and on the volleyball court.
The Hope College teammates have been selected for the 2023 Academic All-America® volleyball teams as chosen by College Sports Communicators. VanderWeide, an outside hitter, is one of nine first-team selections in NCAA Division III. Fiebing, a libero, is one of 10 third-team honorees.
Last month, they helped the Flying Dutch finish runner-up at the NCAA Division III Championships and sweep MIAA regular-season and tournament titles.
VanderWeide (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Fiebing (Traverse City, Michigan / Central) are the third set of Hope volleyball teammates to be named to Academic All-America® teams in the same season.
They join previous teammates: Tracy Westra and McKenna Otto (2021 fall) and Lauren Hazekamp and Jayne Kessel (2015).
Other members of the Flying Dutch to be chosen for Academic All-America® Volleyball teams: Otto (2021 spring), Adair Cutler (2020), Jenna Grasmeyer (2014) and Kim Grotenhuis (2000).
Westra and Grotenhuis were both first-team selections.
A business major, VanderWeide was named American Volleyball Coaches Association Co-National Player of the Year, AVCA Region 7 Player of the Year and MIAA MVP. The junior also received AVCA First Team All-America, AVCA All-Region and All-MIAA First Team honors.
VanderWeide set a Hope single-season record with 535 kills in 35 matches.
A political science major, Fiebing played in every match this season. The senior averaged a team-best 4.48 digs per set.
