No. 13 Women's Swim/Dive Takes Fourth at Challenging D3Shootout

The 13th-ranked Hope College women's swimming and diving team finished fourth out of 10 teams at the D3 Shootout on Saturday, Nov. 9, as several top teams in NCAA Division III gathered for the annual meet at the University of Chicago.

No. 7 Chicago won the event with 672 points, while No. 8 Pomona-Pitzer (599 points) and No. 16 Washington University St. Louis (552 points) completed the podium. The Flying Dutch scored 545 points over the two sessions.

The format of the D3 Shootout allows each of the 10 competing teams to bring eight swimmers plus a diver. Teams entered two swimmers in each event – one in an A flight and the other in a B flight.

Hope added four NCAA "B" cuts on Saturday afternoon, led by the 400 medley relay team of senior Sara Kraus (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford HS), senior Lauren Ryle (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Catholic Central), senior Greta Gidley (Franklin, Michigan / Mercy), and junior Bella Turner (Chelsea, Michigan / Chelsea), which opened the session placing fourth with a time of 3:49.19.

Turner and junior Laurel Wasiniak (Northville, Michigan / Northville) each posted a "B" cut in the 100 freestyle, as Turner won the B final with a season-best 51.16, while Wasiniak was fourth in the A final, touching the wall at 51.30.

Kraus added a third "B" cut to her resume, placing third in the A final of the 100 backstroke with a time of 2:02.30. Junior Katie Hermann (Canton, Michigan / Mercy) won the B final, swimming a season-best 2:03.66.

Kraus also placed second in the 200 individual medley, finishing with a season-best mark of 2:06.31.

In the 100 butterfly, Wasiniak registered a first-place finish in the B final, posting a season-best 56.58.

In the 500 freestyle, freshman Emme D'Errico (Farmington Hills, Michigan / Farmington)  placed third in 5:06.94.

Hope will take a week off before traveling to Gambier, Ohio, for the Total Performance Invitational, hosted by top-ranked Kenyon College. The meet will take place on Thursday-Saturday, Nov. 21-23, with prelims and finals each day.
