No. 2 Volleyball Overpowers Trine in MIAA Tournament Semifinals

Junior Kate Luurtsema leaped high above the volleyball net at DeVos Fieldhouse to deliver an emphatic closing shot for Hope College in the MIAA Tournament semifinals.

It was a fitting conclusion for the second-ranked Flying Dutch, who rolled to a 25-15, 25-8, 25-15 victory against 22-win Trine University on Friday.

Hope, the top seed in the league tournament, never trailed after using a 7-0 run to seize a 14-9 lead midway through the first.

The Flying Dutch (24-2) dominated the final two sets and marched into the championship match on Saturday, Nov. 16, at 6 p.m. against second-seeded Calvin University at DeVos Fieldhouse. Fourth-seeded Trine dropped to 22-6 on the season.

"I thought we were in control. We talk about how we can be reactive or proactive," head coach Becky Schmidt said. "Tonight I felt our defense really inspired a lot of great play because they were ahead of it. Trine is a very good team that tried to go after some vulnerabilities in our defense. I thought we stepped up and made it difficult to expose those."

Hope has won all 27 sets played against MIAA opponents this season, including eight matches that resulted in a second consecutive MIAA regular-season championship.

On Friday, the Flying Dutch spiked Trine for the second time in a week by hitting .381 to the Thunder's .017.

Defensively, Hope recorded 64 digs to Trine's 42.

Three All-MIAA First Team hitters led the Flying Dutch's balanced attack: seniors Alison DeWeerd, Annie Lockett and Addie VanderWeide.

VanderWeide, the two-time MIAA Most Valuable Player from Grand Rapids, Michigan (Grand Rapids Christian HS), and DeWeerd (Kentwood, Michigan / South Christian) recorded eight kills apiece.

Lockett (Mason, Ohio / William Mason) chipped in seven kills.

Junior setter Lauren Lee (Plymouth, Michigan / Saline), also an All-MIAA First Team recipient, finished with 38 assists.

In the second set, Hope scored the first four points and 10 of the first 11. In the third set, the Flying Dutch jumped to a 6-2 lead.

Trine received a team-high 10 kills from Catherine Dobies.

Calvin (19-8) topped third-seeded Albion College, 25-21, 25-20, 25-13 in Friday's first semifinal at DeVos FIeldhouse. The Knights overcame early deficits in both the first and second sets.

Hope has won the past six meetings, a streak that started in the NCAA Division III regional finals on Nov. 12, 2022, and includes two three-set victories this season. Calvin leads the all-time series, 48-93.

The Flying Dutch are seeking their first back-to-back MIAA Tournament title and their sixth MIAA Tournament championship. Calvin is eyeing a league-best 18th MIAA Tournament crown.

The Hope-Calvin winner receives the MIAA's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
