Men's Cross Country Challenges for MIAA Title, Finishes Runner-Up by One Point

The regionally-ranked Hope College men's cross country team finished second at the MIAA Championships on Saturday in Grand Rapids, Michigan. 

Led by three All-MIAA First Team performances, the Flying Dutchmen totaled 37 points, just one point behind the champions, 28th-ranked Calvin University. 

Sophomore Ian Petruska (Fort Collins, Colorado / Fort Collins HS) led Hope with a runner-up finish of 24 minutes, 36.2 seconds on the 8K course at Gainey Athletic Complex.

Petruska earned an All-MIAA First Team spot for the second consecutive  season. 

Petruska was joined on the All-MIAA First Team by senior Connor Vachon (Jenison, Michigan / Jenison) and junior Carston Cole (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa). 

Vachon placed fourth with a time of 24:41.5, while Cole clocked in at 24:55.3 for an 8th-place finish.

The Flying Dutchmen also placed three on the All-MIAA Second Team. 

Freshman Logan Begeman (Portage, Michigan / Portage Central) took 11th place in 25:10.4. 

Fifth-year senior Dan Campbell (Brighton, Michigan / Brighton) finished in 25:17.2 for 12th place, and freshman Elias Kretchmar (Granville, Ohio / Granville) crossed the line at 25:28.4 for 14th place. 

Senior Lucas Guidone (Chicago, Illinois / Taft) rounded out the scoring for Hope with a 17th-place finish of 25:35.7. 

Other top Hope finishers included:

  • Freshman Cooper Jacobsen (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Eastern): 19th place, 25:39.6;
  • Senior Jonathan Harlow (Holland, Michigan / Home School): 21st place, 25:41.3;
  • Senior Tyler King (Villa Park, Illinois / Willowbrook): 25th place, 25:59.1.

Calvin won its 37th consecutive MIAA title with Luke Witvliet leading the way as the first-place individual finisher. Trine University placed in third place with 62 points. 

The Flying Dutchmen will race next at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional on Saturday, Nov. 16, at 11 a.m. in Shelbyville, Indiana.
