Ian Petruska Races to Men's Cross Country's First All-America Run Since 1981

It was a thrilling finish to the 2024 season for the Hope College men's cross country team.

The Flying Dutchmen recorded their first All-America performance in 43 years and the Great Lakes Region's top team performance at the NCAA Division III Championships on Saturday in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Hope placed 29th after competing as a team at nationals for the first time since 1990.

"This was a very exciting day all around for the men and a big step forward for the Hope Men's Cross Country program this weekend," head coach Mark Northuis said. "Finishing ahead of their national ranking and beating the two teams that beat them at the regional championships last weekend, along with claiming their first All-American finish in 43 years. speaks volumes of how well the men raced. They approached the meet wanting to improve on their regional and conference finishes, and they did.

"I am so proud of how well they did in these championship meets and throughout the season."

Junior Ian Petruska (Fort Collins, Colorado / Fort Collins HS) raced to a 19th-place, 8K effort of 24.31.2 seconds at the Lavern Gibson Cross Country Course. There were 294 runners in the field.

Petruska joined Steve Underwood (1981), Stu Scholl (1975) and Sheridan Shaffer (1961) as Hope All-Americans in the sport.

Northuis said months of hard work paid off for Petruska.

"Ian put himself in position to race with the top group. This mentality started last summer by training for four months of 100 miles per week," Northuis said. "He knew he was fit and ready to go. He improved from finishing 268th at last year's championships to 19th this year."

Senior Connor Vachon (Jenison, Michigan  Jenison) posted a 96th-place run of 25:11.2.

Junior Carston Cole (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa) took 192nd by clocking a time of 25:44.3.

Freshman Elias Kretchmar (Granville, Ohio / Granville) posted a 271st-place effort of 26:38.1

Freshman Cooper Jacobsen (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Eastern) earned Hope's final points by finishing 283rd at 25.58.7.

Freshman Logan Begeman (Portage, Michigan / Portage Central) placed 289th at 27:12.2.

Senior Dan Campbell (Brighton, Michigan / Brighton) was 290th at 27:32.8.

"Connor improved from 255th to 96th this year. Experience makes a big difference," Northuis said. "Five of the Hope harriers who raced today and eight of the top 10 will return next year. Hopefully, we can build on this meet and be much improved next year."

The Flying Dutchmen finished ahead of regional runner-up John Carroll University (Ohio) and regional champion Calvin University. John Carroll took 30th in the 32-team event, Calvin 32nd.

"We had a large number of fans make the trek to Terre Haute to cheer the men on, and it was a difference maker," Northuis said.
