Men's Indoor Track/Field Takes First in Two Events, Finishes Runner-up at Aquinas Challenge

Senior Dan Campbell and sophomore Jonas Fraley-Burgett ran away with first-place performances on Friday at Aquinas College.

The distance runners helped the Flying Dutchmen finish runner-up at the event featuring teams from the MIAA and Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference. Hope totaled 11 points during the eight-team tournament and placed five points behind Cornerstone University.

In the mile, Campbell (Brighton, Michigan / Brighton HS) won in 4 minutes, 20.57 seconds. 

Five more Flying Dutchmen joined Campbell in scoring in the event, including sophomore Carston Cole (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa), who took third in 4:26.37.


Junior Tyler King (Villa Park, Illinois / Willowbrook) clocked a third-place mile of 4:27.81. He was followed by sophomore Jonathan Harlow (Holland, Michigan / Home School) in fourth at 4:29.96, freshman Tim Peterson (Portage, Michigan / Portage Northern) in sixth at 4:32.74, and freshman Shane Pitcher (Saline, Michigan / Saline) in eighth at 4:39.82.

In the 3,000 meters, Fraley-Burgett (Kalamazoo, Michigan / Kalamazoo Central) recorded a winning time of 9:03.23.

Sophomore Nile Devers (Gobles, Michigan / Gobles) finished runner-up at 9:15.05. Pitcher was fifth at 9:32.08.

Hope scored in eight more events.

In the 200 meters, sophomore Liam Danitz (West Branch, Michigan / Ogemaw Heights) clocked a second-place run of 22.58 seconds. 

Senior Nathan Woolum (Mattawan, Michigan / Mattawan) placed third at 22.87. Junior Alex Daniels (Holland, Michigan / Holland) was fifth at 23.22.

In the 400 meters, freshman Dylan Terpstra (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) finished fourth at 53.59. Sophomore Wyatt Marsh (Grand Blanc, Michigan / Lake Fenton) was sixth at 53.66.

In the 4x400 relay, Hope's Marsh, Terpstra, junior Aidan Kyle (Weston, Connecticut / Weston) and freshman Jack Trumble (Granger, Indiana / Trinity School) clocked a fourth-place run of 3:38.52.

The relay of junior David Yepez (Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids), senior Silas Peterson (Holland, Michigan / Zeeland West), Cole and Campbell was seventh at 3:43.72.

In the 60-meter hurdles, senior Jackson Player (San Antonio, Texas / Winston Churchill) took fifth with a time of 8.69 seconds. Sophomore John Wenderski  (Livonia, Michigan / University Detroit Jesuit) was seventh at 9.52.

In the 800 meters, Tim Peterson placed fifth at 2:00.97. King was sixth at 2:01.13.

In the long jump, freshman Evan Keolasy (Fort Wayne, Indiana / Blackhawk Christian) finished fifth by leaping 6.17 meters (20-3). Player recorded a seventh-place effort of 5.95 meters (19-8 ¼). Junior Derik Smith (Niles, Michigan / Edwardsburg) was eighth at 5.81 meters (19-0 ¾).

In the weight throw, sophomore Brendyn Mroz (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Grandville) posted a sixth-place throw of 14.01 meters (45-11 ¾).

In the 60-meter dash, Keolasy placed eighth at 7.30 seconds.

Hope's next meet is Friday, Feb. 16, at 3 p.m. at the Grand Valley State University Tune-Up.
