Women's Swim/Dive Opens MIAA Championships in Second Place ... Narrowly

The Hope College women's swimming and diving team is neck-and-neck with rival Calvin University after the first day of the 2024 MIAA Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Championships.

The 12th-ranked Flying Dutch totaled 52 points during Wednesday's only scoring event at the Holland Aquatic Center, the 800-yard freestyle relay.

Hope trails No. 15 Calvin by two points. Alma College is in third place with 44 points and followed by Kalamazoo College (38), Albion College (34) and The University of Olivet (30).

The four-day meet resumes on Thursday, Feb. 22, with two sessions: 10 a.m. for preliminaries and 5 p.m. for finals.

The Flying Dutch recorded the second and third-fastest times during the 800 free relay.

The runner-up relay of junior Greta Gidley (Franklin, Michigan / Mercy HS), junior Sara Kraus (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford), sophomore Ashlea Swingewood (Carmel, Indiana / Carmel) and sophomore Laurel Wasiniak (Northville, Michigan / Northville) posted a season-best time of 7 minutes, 29.40 seconds.

Calvin clocked a meet-record swim of 7:27.59.

Hope took third with a time of 7:42.38 from sophomore Katie Hermann (Canton, Michigan / Mercy), junior Norah Martin (Middleton, Wisconsin / Middleton), sophomore Bella Turner (Chelsea, Michigan / Chelsea) and junior Grace Wesley (Grosse Pointe Shores, Michigan / Grosse Pointe North).

The Knights' other scoring relay placed fifth.
