Five Distance Runners Make All-MIAA Indoor Track and Field Team

Five Hope College distance runners have claimed 2024 All-MIAA Indoor Track and Field honors following the MIAA Championships: senior Rebecca Markham, junior Maddy Struck, sophomores Frances Cozzens and Molly Durow, and freshman Annika Sytsma.

They are among a group of nine All-MIAA selections for the Flying Dutch, who repeated as league champ by winning Saturday's meet at Trine University with 176 points.

Markham (Hoffman Estates, Illinois / William Fremd HS) won two events at the MIAA Championships.

In the 3,000 meters, Markham recorded a winning run of 10 minutes, 21.86 seconds.

In the 5,000 meters, Markham clocked a first-place time of 17:40.17.

Struck (Hainesville, Illinois / Grayslake Central), Cozzens (Lyman, N.H. / Saint Johnsbury), Durow (Glenview, Illinois / Glenbrook South), and Annika Sytsma (Kalamazoo, Michigan / Kalamazoo Christian) earned their all-league honors by winning the distance medley relay by posting a winning run of 12:55.18.

Four teammates claimed All-MIAA honors in short-distance events: sophomore Sara Schermerhorn (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City West); sophomore Catherine Leahy (Elk Rapids, Michigan / Elk Rapids), senior Erin Moran (Arlington Heights, Illinois / John Hersey); and freshman Stella Farmer (Brighton, Michigan / Brighton).

Schermerhorn, who also was named the MIAA"s Most Valuable Women's Indoor Track Athlete, won the 200- and 400-meter runs in meet-record times.

Schermerhorn also anchored the meet-record-setting 4x400 relay that included Leahy, Moran and Farmer.
