Four Sprinters Earn All-MIAA Indoor Track Team Honors; Sara Schermerhorn chosen Most Valuable Track Athlete

Hope College sprinter Sara Schermerhorn co-headlines the 2024 All-MIAA Indoor Track and Field selections as the Most Valuable Track Athlete.

The sophomore from Traverse City, Michigan (Traverse City West HS) is joined on the All-MIAA Team following the MIAA Championships by eight teammates, including three fellow short-distance runners: freshman Stella Farmer, sophomore Catherine Leahy, and senior Erin Moran.

Albion College thrower Tess Anthony was chosen by the league's coaches as the Most Valuable Field Athlete.

Schermerhorn is the third different Hope student-athlete to be Most Valuable Athlete honors in indoor track and field.

Schermerhorn joins a group that includes Ana Tucker (track in 2023 and 2021) and Mitchel Achien'g (field in 2020 and 2019).

On Saturday, Schermerhorn won two individual events and one relay in MIAA-record fashion while helping the Flying Dutch repeat as MIAA champions with a total of 176 points during the meet hosted by Trine University.

Schermerhorn has earned All-MIAA Indoor Track and Field honors in five events during her first two years at Hope.

In the 200-meter dash, Schermerhorn clocked a meet-record time of 24.91 seconds.

In the 400-meter run, Schermerhorn recorded a meet-record run of 59.49 seconds.

In the 60-meter dash, Schermerhorn also ran faster than her previous meet record but finished runner-up with a finals time of 7.74 seconds.

Schermerhorn anchored the Flying Dutch's meet record 4x400 relay.

Leahy (Elk Rapids, Michigan / Elk Rapids), Moran (Arlington Heights, Illinois / John Hersey) and Farmer (Brighton, Michigan / Brighton) teamed with Schermerhorn for a first-place time of 4:02.20.

Five Hope distance runners claimed All-MIAA honors following the MIAA Championships: senior Rebecca Markham (Hoffman Estates, Illinois / William Fremd), junior Maddy Struck (Hainesville, Illinois / Grayslake Central), sophomores Frances Cozzens (Lyman, N.H. / Saint Johnsbury) and Molly Durow (Glenview, Illinois / Glenbrook South), and freshman Annika Sytsma (Kalamazoo, Michigan / Kalamazoo Christian).
