Track and Field Excels at WashU Distance Carnival

Six Hope College track and field runners competed at the Washington University in St. Louis Distance Carnival this week, and four of them times ranked in the Top 20 in NCAA Division III.

In the men's 1,500 meters, junior Connor Vachon (Jenison, Michigan / Jenison) ran a personal-best 3:51.07, which ranks him ninth in Division III. Vachon was runner-up to South Dakota's Jackson Dutcher, who went 3:50.51.

In the men's 800 meters, senior Eli Meder (Williamston, Michigan / Lansing Catholic HS) recorded a run of 1 minute, 52.94 seconds, which puts him 12th in the nation. Meder finished 11th in the race that featured multiple NCAA divisions.

In the women's 10,000 meters, senior Rebecca Markham (Hoffman Estates, Illinois / William Fremd) finished with a personal-best 35:11.54, which placed her ninth in the nation. Markham took sixth in the event.

In the women's 1,500 meters, senior Olivia Quillan (Grandville, Michigan / Calvin Christian) recorded a time of 4:37.23, which put her 17th in Division III. Quillan finished 10th in the race.

In the men's 5,000 meters, sophomore Carston Cole (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa) won his heat and placed 71st out of 278 runners with a time of 15:25.62.

In the men's 10,000 meters, sophomore Ian Petruska (Fort Collins, Colorado / Fort Collins) clocked a time of 31:48.17 in his season debut for 69th place out of 141 entrants.

Hope's next meet is Friday-Saturday, April 5-6, at the Grand Valley State University Early Meet.
