Men's Golf Shoots 297 to Open Illinois Wesleyan Invitational, Is Tied for Third Place

Hope College golfer Logan DeWitt carded an even-par 72 on Friday to lead the Flying Dutchmen during the Illinois Wesleyan University Invitational's opening round.

Hope is tied for third place at the 37-team, 36-hole event after a team score of 297 on the 6,901-yard Ironwood Golf Club.

The Flying Dutchmen and the No. 21-ranked University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire trail first-place and fourth-ranked Illinois Wesleyan by 14 strokes and second-place Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) by three heading into the final round.

Golfers tee off on Saturday, April 6, at 9 a.m. Central. Most of the top teams after Friday will golf on the par-71, 6,915-yard Weibring Golf Club.

DeWitt (Zeeland, Michigan / Holland Christian HS) is tied for sixth in the individual standings. He overcame bogeys on the par-3 eighth hole and par-4 10th hole with back-to-back birdies on the par-3 16th hole and the par-5 17th hole.

Harold Dobernecker of Central College (Iowa) leads the field of 214 golfers by firing a 2-under 69 at Weibring Golf Club.

Sophomore Liam Casey (Northville, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central) carded a 74 and is tied for 14th place.

Junior Will Robson (Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) chipped in a 75 and is tied for 26th place.

Junior Will Webb (Lake Forest, Illinois / Lake Forest) shot a 76 and is tied for 38th.

Sophomore Patrick Michael (Carmel, Indiana / Carmel) finished with a 77 and is tied for 53rd.

Hope and Wisconsin-Eau Claire are three strokes ahead of fifth-place Bethel University (Minn.) and five ahead of sixth-place Trine University.

Illinois Wesleyan posted one round of 70 and three rounds of 71. Gustavus Adolphus recorded three rounds of 73.
