Box Score 2 The Hope College women's tennis team traveled out to Madison, Wisconsin, for a weekend slate of quality tennis at the Midwest Invitational.
The 32nd-ranked Flying Dutch opened with a 5-4 loss against Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) but rebounded to defeat No. 38 University of Wisconsin-Whiteater 5-4.
The 13-4 Orange and Blue continue to play in the Midwest Invitational on Saturday, April 6, at 10:30 a.m. Central against North Central College (Ill.).
Against Wisconsin-Whitewater (8-5), the Flying Dutch put themselves in striking range for the second time on Friday with a 2-1 lead after doubles play.
Sophomore Amanda Lopykinski (Lemont, Illinois / Lemont Township) and junior Sullivan Moran (Birmingham, Michigan / Wylie E. Groves) emerged victorious in the top line, winning an 8-4 duel.
At second doubles, senior Annika Weeber (Rockford, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) and junior Miyako Coffey (Cedar Rapids, Iowa / Xavier) played to a tiebreaker before falling 8-7 (9-7) at second doubles.
At third doubles, freshmen
Phoebe Walker (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City Central) and
Madison Wei (Parker, Colorado / Regis Jesuit) claimed an 8-3 victory.
The Flying Dutch didn't give away a second lead heading into singles.
Lopykinski clinched the match against her second regionally ranked opponent of the day, the Warhawks Cassandra Lee, 14th in the Central Region.
Lopykinski dropped the first set 1-6 but took the second set 6-4 to force a super-tiebreak. Then, Lopykinski downed Lee 10-4 for Hope's fifth point.
Hope split the second and third lines as Moran lost 6-3, 6-3 at the second flight, while Weeber picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win at the third flight.
Coffey put the Flying Dutch up 4-2 in the match by serving up an epic 6-2, 3-6 (10-7) victory.
At fifth singles, Wei was narrowly defeated 3-6, 6-4 (1-10), and sophomore Hope Rhoades (Holland, Michigan / Holland Christian) fell 4-6, 6-7 (3-7) at sixth singles.
Against Gustavus Adolphus (8-6), Hope came out swinging in doubles play, picking up two wins.
Lopykinski and Moran led the way at first doubles with an 8-3 victory. Weeber and Coffey were edged 8-6 at second doubles. Walker and Wei drew the Flying Dutch back into striking distance with an 8-7 (7-2) win at third doubles.
Hope could not pick up the three singles victories needed to win the overall match against the Gusties.
Lopykinski won the top line, 6-1, 6-1, taking down Gustavus Adolphus's Allison Szalay, ranked 17th in the Central Region.
Moran also won again, taking a 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 victory at second singles.
Weeber's strong play at third singles was rebuffed as she fell 6-4, 6-4.
Coffey lost 6-2, 6-2 at fourth singles.
Wei dropped a 6-3, 6-3 match at the fifth singles.
Rhoades lost 6-1, 6-4 at sixth singles.
