Women's Track and Field Wins Three Events at GVSU Early Meet

The Hope College women's outdoor track and field posted three first-place efforts and three runner-up performances on Saturday at the Grand Valley State University Early Meet.

The Flying Dutch clocked the top times in the 200 and 400-meter runs and the 4x400 during the two-day, non-scoring meet.

In the 400 meters, sophomore Catherine Leahy (Elk Rapids, Michigan / Elk Rapids HS) posted a winning and season-best time of 57.44 seconds to top a field of 13 runners. Junior Jasmine Zimmerman (Byron Center, Michigan / Home School) took fifth at 59.55.

In the 200 meters, sophomore Sara Schermerhorn (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City West) won the eight-runner final with a season-best run of 24.49 seconds. Leahy placed sixth at 26.12.

In the 4x400 relay, Hope recorded two of the fastest four times in the event.

Leahy, senior Erin Moran (Arlington Heights, Illinois / John Hersey), Zimmerman and Schermerhorn posted a winning and season-best time of 3:56.25.

Sophomore Madison Stern (Saline, Michigan / Saline), freshman Amanda Markham (Hoffman Estates, Illinois / William Fremd), sophomore Molly Durow (Glenview, Illinois / Glenbrook South) and senior Olivia Quillan (Grandville, Michigan / Calvin Christian) took fourth at 4:15.37.

In the 100 meters, Schermerhorn finished runner-up among eighth entrants after recording a time of 12:36.

In the 400-meter hurdles, sophomore Elliana Johnson (East Lansing, Michigan / Haslett) placed runner-up in a field of 13 by posting a season-best time of 1:09.63. Sophomore Jasmine Zimmerman (Byron Center, Michigan / Home School) took fifth at 1:12.30. Durow was seventh at 1:13.15.

In the 4x100 relay, Hope finished second to Division II Davenport University in a two-relay race. Sophomore Ava Schmidt (Saline, Michigan / Saline), Leahy, Jasmine Zimmerman and Schermerhorn clocked a season-best time of 48.71.

In the shot put, junior Greta Robrahn (Zeeland, Michigan / Zeeland East) took fifth among 24 throwers with a season-best toss of 13.01 meters (42-2 8 1/4). Sophomore Kamryn Bice (Monroe, Michigan / Monroe) was seventh at 11.84 meters (38-10 ¼).

In the 110 hurdles final, freshman Gemma Lerchen (Empire, Michigan / Glen Lake) finished sixth in a seven-runner race by posting a time of 17.28.

In the long jump, freshman Bridget Crombie (Lansing, Michigan / Home School) placed seventh with a leap of 4.83 meters (15-10 ¼).

In the 800 meters, Quillan finished eighth among 33 runners with a run of 2:17.92. The time was the fastest among NCAA Division III runners on the day.

In the 5,000 meters, freshman Grace Baldauff (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania / Northgate) clocked an eighth-place time of 19:55.23 in a field of 12 runners. Junior Caleigh Hurley (Brighton, Michigan / Brighton) was ninth at 20:35.00.

In the discus, freshman Olivia Smith (Cadillac, Michigan / Cadillac) was ninth with a toss of 36.18 meters (118-8).

Hope's next meet is Saturday, April 13, at 10:30 a.m. Central at the Wheaton College (Ill.) Invitational.
