The 33rd-ranked Hope College women's tennis team concluded its season in the regional semifinals of the NCAA Division III Tournament, on Friday, with a 5-0 loss to the third-ranked University of Chicago in Whitewater, Wisconsin.Â
The MIAA regular-season and tournament champion Flying Dutch finished the season with an overall record of 20-6.Â
The Maroons moved on to face No. 13 Case Western Reserve University in the regional finals on Saturday, May 11. CWRU defeated No. 14 Carleton College (Minn.), 5-0, on Friday afternoon.
Chicago, regionally ranked No. 1 while Hope was fourth, started the match by sweeping doubles play behind two of three doubles pairings who are currently ranked in the top three in Region VI.Â
At No. 1 doubles, the pairing of Rena Lin and Oliwia Mikos defeated the regionally sixth-ranked duo of sophomore Amanda Lopykinski (Lemont, Illinois / Lemont Township HS) and junior Sullivan Moran (Birmingham, Michigan / Wylie E. Groves), 8-2.
Senior Annika Weeber (Rockford, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) and junior Miyako Coffey (Cedar Rapids, Iowa /Xavier) were topped 8-0, by the third-ranked doubles pairings of Sylwia Mikos and Shianna Guo in the region at No. 2 doubles.Â
Nika Vesely and Lauren Khou earned a 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles over the freshman pairing of Madison Wei (Parker, Colorado / Regis Jesuit) and Phoebe Walker (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City Central).Â
Chicago earned the clinching points with Guo winning 6-0, 6-0 vs. Coffey at No. 4 singles and Sarena Biria winning 6-1 6-1 vs. Wei at No. 5 singles.
