Volleyball Repeats as AVCA Team Academic Award Recipient

The Hope College volleyball team served up a successful year in the classroom, too.

The Flying Dutch — the 2023 national runner-up in NCAA Division III — also claimed the American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award sponsored by INTENT during the 2023-24 school year.

It marks the 16th consecutive season that Hope has received the AVCA accolade.

The Flying Dutch, coached by Becky Schmidt, are among a record number of 1,400 collegiate and high school volleyball programs to earn the recognition.

Last fall, Hope advanced to the national championship match for the second time in program history and finished with a 32-3 overall record.

The MIAA regular-season and tournament champion Flying Dutch went four five-set matches during the NCAA Tournament before falling to defending national champion Juniata College (Pa.) in the title match in Claremont, Calif.

In 2014, the Flying Dutch became national champions for the first time by defeating Emory University (Ga.) in the title match.
