Men's Golf Fires 285 at First MIAA Jamboree, Finishes One Stroke Off the Lead

Hope College golfer Liam Casey found a few birdies at Zollner Golf Course on Tuesday in Angola, Indiana.

The junior from Northville, Michigan (Detroit Catholic Central HS) carded six birdies en route to a near-record, 4-under-par 67 on Tuesday during the season's first MIAA Jamboree.

Casey's round, along with junior Patrick Michael's even-par 71, propelled the Flying Dutchmen to a second-place total of 285. Host Trine University finished one stroke better at 284. Hope finished 14 strokes ahead of third-place Albion College.

The jamboree featured the first of 108 holes this fall and next spring that will determine the MIAA champion. The Flying Dutchmen have won the past two league titles.

Casey shared medalist honors with two Trine golfers, Jack Besner and Garrett James, after firing six birdies and two bogeys.

The 67 ties for the third-lowest MIAA round all-time for a Flying Dutchmen golfer. Casey matched teammate Will Webb at Zollner Golf Course in 2023, Tommy Yamaoka at Hope's Wuskowhan Players Club in 2005 and Ryan Shedd at Hope's Clearbrook Golf Course in 2003.

The Hope record for MIAA play of 65 is shared by Nick Campbell at Zollner Golf Course in 2012 and Josh Gibson at Wuskowhan Players Club in 2017.

Michael (Carmel, Indiana / Carmel) tied for fourth place on Tuesday after posting four birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey.

Freshman Will Thomas (Portage, Michigan / Portage Central) also shot a 71, but his round did not count toward Hope's team score.

Webb (Lake Forest, Illinois / Lake Forest) tied for sixth with a 72.

The Flying Dutchmen also received scoring rounds of 75 from junior Klay Redman (Dublin, Ohio / Dublin Coffman) and 76 from sophomore Hank Roebuck (Ann Arbor, Michigan / Skyline).

Hope returns to competition on Friday-Saturday, Sept. 20-21, at the 36-hole NCAA Division III Midwest Region Classic hosted in Kansasville, Wisconsin, at Brighton Dale Golf Links.
