Women's Tennis Serves Up Success at ITA Central Regional

The Hope College women's tennis team traveled to Kalamazoo College this weekend to play in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III Women's Central Regional Championships.

The Flying Dutch asserted themselves on the regional stage in a field including nationally and regionally ranked singles and doubles players, winning three singles and three doubles matches in the main draw.

The six main draw wins are the best under head coach Austin Hunt, who begins his fourth season at the helm for both men's and women's tennis.

Senior Sullivan Moran (Birmingham, Michigan / Wylie E. Groves HS) and freshman Hadley Krygier (White Lake, Michigan / Walled Lake Northern) picked up the first two wins of the tournament on Friday, winning 6-2, 6-0, and 6-0, 6-0 respectively.

Junior Amanda Lopykinski (Lemont, Illinois / Lemont Township), who earned the 17th seed and a first round bye, won her Round of 64 matchup 6-3, 6-2, before falling in the Round of 32.

In doubles play, three Hope doubles teams picked up wins early Friday morning, including a Round of 32 victory. Doubles matches were played as eight-game pro sets.

Sophomores Phoebe Walker (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City Central) and Madison Wei (Parker, Colorado / Regis Jesuit) served an 8-4 victory over their DePauw opponents before falling to the top-ranked doubles team, 8-2.

Krygier and senior Miyako Coffey (Cedar Rapids, Iowa / Xavier) delivered an 8-2 victory in the first round before narrowly falling to the ninth-ranked doubles team, 8-6.

Lopykinski and Moran earned a ninth seed and a first-round bye, then picked up Hope's lone Round of 32 victory, 8-4, over opponents from Kenyon College. The pair were defeated in the Round of 16 by the second-seeded team from perennial national powerhouse UChicago.

The Flying Dutch will play their only team match of the fall season on Friday, Oct. 4, at 4 p.m. at Lawrence Tech.
