Women's Swim/Dive Wins Two Events, Finishes Runner-up at GVSU Quad

Sophomore Emme D'Errico and freshman Makenzie Baldwin delivered first-place performances for the Hope College women's swimming and diving team during a four-team meet hosted by Grand Valley State University this weekend at the Holland Aquatic Center.

The two-day meet featured three NCAA Division III opponents: GVSU, Saginaw Valley State University and McKendree University (Illinois).

D'Errico (Farmington Hills, Michigan / Farmington) clocked a winning 100-yard butterfly of 2 minutes, 7.5 seconds.

Baldwin (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa) posted a first-place 100 backstroke of 56.48.

Hope finished second in the meet, totaling 776.5 points. GVSU won with 1,362 points, followed by the Flying Dutch, SVSU (316) and McKendree (294.5).

The Orange and Blue posted 11 more swims in the Top 4, including five more than were second-place.

In the 100 backstroke, Baldwin placed second at 2:02.42. Senior Greta Gidley (Franklin, Michigan / Mercy) was fourth at 2:05.38.

In the 200 individual medley, Gidley recorded a runner-up effort of 2:05.78.

Hope posted second-place swims in three relays:
  • 200 freestyle at 1:33.94 from Gidley, freshman Claudia Busse (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven), sophomore Emmy Sower (Midland, Michigan / H.H. Dow) and senior Laurel Wasiniak (Northville, Michigan / Northville);
  • 200 medley at 1:44.73 from Gidley, Busse, freshman Meg Pinkerton (Ann Arbor, Michigan / Pioneer) and Wasiniak;
  • 400 medley at 3:51.29 from Baldwin, Gidley, Busse and Wasiniak.
Wasiniak and Busse placed third and fourth, respectively, in both the 50 free and 100 free.

Wasinaik went 23.68 in the 50 free and 51.86 in the 100 free. Busse went 23.75 in the 50 free and 51.95 in the 100 free.
D'Errico took third in the 500 freestyle at 5:10.53. 

Wasiniak finished third in the 100 butterfly at 57.74.

Gidley was fourth in the 100 breaststroke at 1:05.04.

In 1-meter diving, freshman Grace Dawson (Jackson, Michigan / Western) placed fourth with 234.00 points.

Hope's next meet is the MIAA Invite on Saturday, Oct. 25, at 11:30 a.m. at Holland Aquatic Center.
