Everett Cox Wins 500 Freestyle for No. 14 Men's Swim/Dive at MIAA Invite

Sophomore Everett Cox clocked the fastest 500-yard freestyle to lead the 14th-ranked Hope College men's swimming and diving team at the MIAA Invite on Saturday at the Holland Aquatic Center.

Cox (Sugar Land, Texas / Logos Prep) posted a time of 4 minutes, 44.10 seconds.


The Flying Dutchmen finished second out of six teams with 617 points. The outcome does not factor into MIAA championship determination.


Hope placed runner-up in six events, including the 400-yard freestyle relay, where Cox, sophomore Blake Hetherington (Jackson, Michigan / Lumen Christi), junior Graham Eisenmann (Ozark, Missouri / Ozark) and junior Josh Bordovsky (Herndon, Virginia / South Lakes) recorded a time of 3:06.95.


Eisenmann and Bordovsky went 2-3 in the 200 freestyle with times of 1:42.28 and 1:44.95, respectively.


The Orange and Blue finished 2-3 on both diving boards. Sanders placed second on the 3-meter (250.35 points) and 1-meter (246.95), while senior Justin Romero (Detroit, Michigan / Woodhaven) took third on both with 233.00 on the 3-meter and 232.25 on the 1-meter.


In the 200 individual medley, sophomore Luke Wyrick (Glen Ellyn, Illinois / Glenbard West) touched second at 1:59.32.


In the 200 breaststroke, sophomore Luke Newcomb (Brighton, Michigan / Brighton) recorded a runner-up time of 57.64.


In the 50 freestyle, Cox finished second at 21.65.


Hope's 200 medley relay team of freshman Jack Szuba (Farmington Hills, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central), Newcomb, sophomore Tyler Houpt (Mason, Ohio / William Mason) and freshman Nolan Smith (Buffalo Grove, Illinois / Buffalo Grove) placed third with a time of 1:36.64.


In the 100 backstroke, freshman Ethan Esparza (Rosenberg, Texas / John H. Randle) finished fourth in 53.36 seconds.


Calvin won the MIAA Invite with 949 points. Hope finished ahead of Kalamazoo College (230), Alma College (213), Albion College (145) and The University of Olivet (1).


The Flying Dutchmen's next meet is Saturday, Nov. 1, at 11 a.m. at the Kalamazoo College Invite.
