No. 7 Women's Swim/Dive Takes First at MIAA Invite

The seventh-ranked Hope College women's swimming and diving team posted the fastest times in six events en route to winning the MIAA Invite on Saturday.

Led by senior Greta Gidley and freshman Claudia Busse, the Flying Dutch totaled 815 points at the Holland Aquatic Center to finish ahead of runner-up Calvin University (683).

Gidley (Franklin, Michigan / Mercy) touched the wall first in the 50-yard freestyle at 23.76 seconds and the 100 butterfly at 56.66. Freshman Makenzie Baldwin (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa) was second in the 100 butterfly at 59.02.

Busse (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) topped the field in the 100 freestyle at 52.67 seconds and the 200 freestyle at 1:55.73.


In the 100 freestyle, senior Bella Turner (Chelsea, Michigan / Chelsea) finished runner-up at 53.58. In the 200 freestyle, Baldwin placed second at 1:55.96.


Gidley, Busse and Baldwin led off the winning 400 freestyle relay that senior Laurel Wasiniak (Northville, Michigan / Northville) anchored, finishing in 3:30.98.


Hope also clocked four of the five fastest times in the 200 individual medley, including the top performance of 2:10.60 from senior Katie Hermann (Canton, Michigan / Mercy). 
Hermann was followed by:
  • 3. Wasiniak, 2:16.68;
  • 4. Sophomore Riess Estep (Smyrna, Georgia / Whitefield Academy), 2:17.01;
  • 5. Junior Dillon Horsley (Indianapolis, Indiana / North Central), 2:19.86.
In the 200 backstroke, Hermann recorded a second-place time of 1:00.39. Junior Avery Bills (Traverse City, Michigan / Traverse City Central) finished fourth at 1:02.56, and junior Lillian Ryden (Holland, Michigan / Holland Christian) was fifth at 1:03.57.

The Flying Dutch finished runner-up in three more events.


In the 100 breaststroke, Estep placed second at 1:07.85, followed by senior Madi Remenschneider (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa) in third at 1:07.92.


Freshman Grace Dawson (Jackson, Michigan / Western) finished runner-up on both diving boards — scoring 242.60 points on the 3-meter and 240.34 on the 1-meter. Junior Laura Zupancic (Fort Collins, Colorado / Liberty Common) was third on the 1-meter with 223.35 points.


In the 500 freestyle, three Hope swimmers recorded top-five efforts:
  • 3. Wasiniak, 5:29.44; 
  • 4. Junior Paige Potter (Lake Orion, Michigan / Lake Orion), 5:31.54;
  • 5. Freshman Meredith Righter (Portage, Michigan / Portage Central), 5:36.27
Hope's 200 medley relay of Potter, Remenschneider, freshman Meg Pinkerton (Ann Arbor, Michigan / Pioneer) and Turner took third at 1:50.94.

In the 1,000 freestyle, senior Ashlea Swingewood (Carmel, Indiana / Carmel) placed fourth at 11:18.29.


The Flying Dutch and Calvin finished ahead of third-place Alma College (246), Kalamazoo College (213), Albion College (208) and the University of Olivet (9).


Hope's next meet is Saturday, Nov. 1, at 11 a.m. at the Kalamazoo College Invite.
