No. 7 Women's Swim/Dive Takes First Place at West Michigan Invite

Hope wins 11 events on Saturday at Kalamazoo

The seventh-ranked Hope College women's swimming and diving team made the most of its one day in the pool at the two-day West Michigan Invite hosted by Kalamazoo College.

The Flying Dutch recorded nine event victories Saturday en route to a first-place total of 1,154 points at the three-team meet. Hope finished ahead of second-place John Carroll (Ohio) University, which scored 826 points, and third-place Kalamazoo, which had 622.


Senior Greta Gidley (Franklin, Michigan / Mercy) led Hope with three individual victories.


In the 100-yard butterfly, Gidley topped a 1-2-3-4 Hope finish by touching the wall in 58.24 seconds. Freshman Mackenzie Baldwin (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa) was the runner-up at 59.59.


In the 100 breaststroke, Gidley placed first in 1:07.28. Senior Madi Remenschneider (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa) took second in 1:09.16.


In the 200 breaststroke, Gidley won with a time of 2:25.37, followed by Remenschneider at 2:31.19.


Gidley also swam on Hope's first-place 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.


Baldwin swept the backstroke events, finishing the 100 in 57.79 and the 200 in 2:05.18. Senior Katie Hermann (Canton, Michigan / Mercy) placed second in both, clocking 1:00.06 and 2:09.74, respectively.


Hermann won the 400 individual medley, leading a top-six Hope sweep with a time of 4:38.89. Sophomore Emme D'Errico (Farmington Hills, Michigan / Farmington) was second in 4:40.68.


D'Errico led a 1-2 Hope finish in the 200 butterfly, recording a time of 2:11.95. Senior Ashlea Swingewood (Carmel, Indiana / Carmel) placed second in 2:18.78.


Freshman Claudia Busse (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) won the 100 freestyle in 52.91. Senior Laurel Wasiniak (Northville, Michigan / Northville) finished second in 53.20.


Hope's 200 medley relay of Baldwin, Remenschneider, Gidley and Wasiniak finished first in 1:47.93. The relay of junior Lillian Ryden (Holland, Michigan / Holland Christian), junior Dillon Horsley (Indianapolis, Indiana / North Central), Busse and senior Bella Turner (Chelsea, Michigan / Chelsea) was second in 1:49.99.


The Flying Dutch also posted a 1-2 finish in the 400 freestyle relay. The quartet of Gidley, Hermann, Turner and Wasiniak placed first in 3:30.98. Baldwin, D'Errico, freshman Allyson O'Brien (Beverly Hills, Michigan / Wylie E. Groves) and Busse were runners-up in 3:40.09.


In diving, freshman Grace Dawson (Jackson, Michigan / Western) recorded first-place performances on the 1-meter board with 238.13 points and the 3-meter board with 207 points. The Flying Dutch had four of the top five totals on each board.


Turner added a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:00.17.


Freshman Meredith Righter (Portage, Michigan / Portage Central) was runner-up ini the 1,650 freestyle after a swim of 19:00.17.


Hope's next meet is the D3 Shootout, hosted by the University of Chicago on Friday-Saturday, Nov. 7-8.
