No. 13 Women's Swim/Dive Wins Four Events During Loss at No. 6 Chicago

The No. 13-ranked Hope College women's swimming and diving team wrapped up the non-conference portion of its schedule, traveling to the University of Chicago for a dual meet between two nationally-ranked programs. The sixth-ranked Maroons were victorious in the meet, outscoring the Flying Dutch by a 178-118 margin. 

Senior Greta Gidley (Franklin, Michigan / Mercy HS), senior Sara Kraus (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford), junior Laurel Wasiniak (Northville, Michigan / Northville), and freshman Emme D'Errico (Farmington Hills, Michigan / Farmington) were event winners for Hope, which suffered its first dual meet loss of the season. 


Gidley and Wasiniak shared the victory in the 50-yard freestyle, as the duo tied with a time of 24.13. Junior Bella Turner (Chelsea, Michigan / Chelsea) placed third in the event, touching the wall in 24.36, while senior Lauren Ryle (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Catholic Central) finished fourth with a time of 24.84.


Gidley also won the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:05.95, while junior Katie Hermann (Canton, Michigan / Mercy) placed second after completing the race in 2:10.78.


Gidley was also the top finisher for Hope in the 100 freestyle, placing third with a time of 52.02 as the top three swimmers were within .15 seconds of each other. 


D'Errico won the 200 butterfly, posting a time of 2:09.58, while Kraus won the 200 backstroke, touching the wall in 2:07.67.


Kraus also finished second in the 100 backstroke, posting a time of 58.84. Freshman Emmy Sower (Midland, Michigan / H.H. Dow) was fourth in the event with a 1:00.64 as third through sixth place were separated by just over two-tenths of a second. 


Hope opened the meet with a victory in the 200 medley relay, as the team of Kraus, Gidley, Wasiniak and Turner posted a winning time of 1:46.64. Turner's 23.88 anchor leg sealed the win for the Flying Dutch, as Hope was only three-hundredths of a second ahead of the field at the 150-yard mark but ended by winning by nine-tenths. 


Turner posted a second-place showing in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:56.75. Hermann placed fourth in the event, touching the wall in 1:57.55, just over a tenth of a second out of third place.


In the 1,000 freestyle, senior Norah Martin (Middleton, Wisconsin / Middleton) placed second for Hope with a time of 10:59.67, while senior Grace Wesley (Grosse Pointe Shores, Michigan Grosse Pointe North) finished third in 11:25.72.


Sophomore Dillon Horsley (Indianapolis, Indiana / North Central) placed second in the 100 breaststroke, touching the wall in 1:09.79, while Wasiniak added a second-place finish in the 100 butterfly, finishing in 58.80. 


In the 200 breaststroke, Hermann led the Flying Dutch with a time of 2:28.49 to place second, while junior Madi Remenschneider (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa) took third in 2:31.70.


Hope recorded third- through sixth-place finishes in the 500 freestyle, led by D'Errico, who touched the wall in 5:20.53 to rank third. 


In the final swimming event of the meet, the 400 medley relay team of Wasiniak, Turner, D'Errico and Ryle finished second in 3:34.36, just one-tenth of a second off of first place. 


In diving, sophomore Laura Zupancic (Fort Collins / Colorado Liberty Common) was Hope's top finisher on both the one- and three-meter boards. 


Hope will wrap up the dual meet portion of its schedule next week, traveling to face No. 17 Calvin. Competition will begin at 5 p.m. at the Venema Aquatic Center on the campus of Calvin University.
